Abstract: The prodn. of alkanols comprises reacting a mixt. of CO and H2 at at least 35 bars and at least 150≦̸C, over a catalyst system consisting of a Ru compd. and a halogen free Co compd., dispersed in a low m.pt. quat. phosphonium or ammonium base or salt, esp. a tetraalkyl or mixed alkylaryl phosphonium quat. compd. The Ru compd. is esp. RuO2, and the Co compd. is CO2(CO)8. This system gives excellent selectivity for ethanol and good yields.

Abstract: Ethylene glycol was prepd. by reacting a mixt. of H2, CO and formaldehyde in an inert oxygenated hydrocarbon solvent at a superatmos. press. of at least 35 bars, using a catalyst of Co compd. and an catalytic promoter of Sn or Ge compd. Ethlene glycol is useful as an antifreeze or coolant in chemical synthesis. The glycol was obtd. with a high degree of selectivity undert moderate conditions of temp. and pressure. MeOH is the only major organic by-prod. in this process.

Abstract: Predominantly linear polyethylenepolyamines can be prepared by reacting ethylenediamine with monoethanolamine in the presence of a phosphorus/titania/zirconia catalyst. The catalysts are prepared by mixing solutions of a tetrasubstituted compound of titanium with a tetrasubstituted compound of zirconium, adding a hydrolysing agent to coprecipitate titania and zirconia, treating the coprecipitate with a compound of phosphorus to bond from 0.5 to 6 wt.% of phosphorus to the coprecipitate and then stabilizing the resultant catalyst by calcining it at 200 to 800 DEG C. Alternatively, the catalyst can be dried at 20 to 150 DEG C and stabilized by subsequent calcining at 200 to 900 DEG C.

The simultaneous use of a ruthenium compound and a cobalt (II) halide results in ethanol formation in a higher yield and with greater selectivity than is achieved using either material in the absence of the other.
