Abstract:
A chemical synthetic route for nanostructured materials that is scalable to large volume production, comprising spray atomization of a reactant solution into a precursor solution to form a nanostructured oxide or hydroxide precipitate. The precipitate is then heat-treated followed by sonication, or sonicated followed by heat treatment. This route yields nanostructured doped and undoped nickel hydroxide, manganese dioxide, and ytrria-stabilized zirconia. Unusual morphological superstructures may be obtained, including well-defined cylinders or nanorods, as well as a novel structure in nickel hydroxide and manganese dioxide, comprising assemblies of nanostructured fibers, assemblies of nanostructured fibers and agglomerates of nanostructured particles, and assemblies of nanostructured fibers and nanostructured particles. These novel structures have high percolation rates and high densities of active sites, rendering them particularly suitable for catalytic applications.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for detecting the location of an incipient fault in an insulated power system which includes the application of an excitation voltage to a power line to produce a partial discharge signal pulse at a fault (34) along the power line. The surface of the power line is scanned with two axially spaced sensors (30, 32) disposed adjacent the surface of the power line, the sensors detecting the partial discharge signal pulse to produce discrete detected pulses. These detected pulses are combined to produce a combined signal having an amplitude level which reaches an extreme value when the fault is located equidistantly between the sensors. The sensors are moved along the power line until the fault is located substantially equidistantly between the sensors as indicated by the extreme amplitude level of the combined signal.
Abstract:
A chemotactic factor released from tissue under ischemic conditions represents the initial signal that recruits neutrophils to the tissue. As released, the factor exists as a positively charged protein complex consisting of a low molecular weight active peptide factor that carries a neutral or negative charge and a weakly associated high molecular weight protein. The tissue derived complex exhibits a molecular weight of about 100,000-300,000 daltons and the factor is obtained therefrom by concentration and purification. The peptide factor is non-immune cell derived and non-serum derived and exhibits a molecular weight of approximately 3,000 daltons.
Abstract:
A composition and method are described for providing conformal protective or decorative polymer coatings on metals such as aluminum, copper, iron, steel, zinc, and this by dip autopolymerization. In accordance with the present invention, an acidic solution of organic monomer undergoes autopolymerization upon contact with a metal substrate, thereby forming a polymeric coating on the substrate. The method comprises providing the acidic monomer solution, dipping the metal substrate to be coated for a prescribed period of time depending on the thickness of the coating desired, and then removing the substrate from the solution. Importantly, the polymerization requires no application of external driving force, such as thermal or electrical energy. The coatings thus formed are up to 50 microns thick, and conform to the shape of the substrate. These coatings further have uniform thickness, and excellent thermal stability and protective properties. In one preferred embodiment of the present invention, the composition comprises an acidic solution of an organic electron acceptor monomer that undergoes autopolymerization in contact with a metal substrate, thereby forming a polymeric coating on the substrate. In another preferred embodiment of the present invention, the composition comprises an acidic solution of an organic electron acceptor monomer and an organic electron donor monomer that undergo autopolymerization in contact with a metal substrate, thereby forming a polymeric coating on the substrate. Metal-polymer composites are also described.
Abstract:
A method of targeted rescue of cells from the effect of a chemotherapeutic cytotoxin is disclosed. A cytotoxin directed against diseased cells is administered with an antagonist-conjugate targetable to normal cells. The antagonist-conjugate is made up of an antagonist of the cytotoxin complexed with a cell-specific binding agent which specifically binds to a cellular surface component present on normal, but not diseased cells. The cellular surface component is typically a surface receptor of the cell which mediates endocytosis. The antagonist-conjugate is specifically taken up by normal cells to provide protection from the toxic effects of the cytotoxin. Diseased cells which lack the surface receptor do not take up effective amounts of the antagonist and consequently are unprotected.
Abstract:
A video pixel spectrometer system employs an image aquisition device (12) and a spectrometer (14) to provide a video display of the spectral characteristics of an image sector for a series of discrete positions of the image sector. The output from the spectrometer (14) is converted to digital data and processed for displaying various video displays (D1, D2, D3, D4 and D5) of the spectral characteristics. Cameras (24, 26 and 28) are also employed to acquire images for processing of various physical features and to aid in positioning the input image.
Abstract:
Enhanced magnetic resonance imaging contrast is provided by targeting paramagnetic material specifically to selected mammalian cell types. A carrier system for the paramagnetic material utilizes receptor mediated endocytosis to endow cell specificity and is formed by complexing the paramagnetic material to a glycoprotein-chelator conjugate. The conjugate is formed by bonding receptor-specific ligands to chelating agents through covalent bonding. The carrier not only exhibits a high degree of cell spcificity but also provides significant accumulation of the paramagnetic material within the cell to contribute to the improved enhancement of the magnetic resonance contrast.
Abstract:
An image acquisition system employs spaced lateral effect diodes for acquiring signals which are processed to generate signals indicative of a three dimensional image of an object. An endoscope (50) is adapted for operation in association with an optical scanner (12) which generates a beam of radiation tracing out a raster (62). The endoscope (50) employs at least one optical channel comprising a bundle of coherent flexible optical fibers (52). Elemental photodetectors which may be mounted at either the distal end of the endoscope probe (50) or the proximal end of the endoscope probe (50) are employed for sensing reflected radiation and generating a video signal. The optical channel may also be employed for transmission of a therapy beam. The endoscope (50) is capable of obtaining multi-spectral and multi-dimensional images of the tissue under examination.
