PERFLUOROISOPROPYLIDENIMINE AND TETRAFLUOROETHYLENE ARE COPOLYMERIZED BY IRRATIATION WITH GAMMA RAYS. THE COPOLYMER HAS A MOLECULAR WEIGHT OF AT LEAST ABOUT 1400 AND A MOLECULAR STRUCTURE WHICH CONSISTS PREDOMINANTLY OF POLYTETRAETHYLENE GROUPS AND MAY BE REPRESENTED BY THE FORMULA
-(C(-CF3)2-N(-F)-(CF2-CF2)X)N-
WHEREIN X AND N ARE INTEGERS GREATER THAN 1. THE COPOLYMER MELTS TO A FREE-FLOWING LIQUID AND IS USEFUL FOR MAKING PLASTIC ARTICLES BY EXTRUSION OR INJECTION MOLDING MEANS.
WHEREIN X IS FLURO, CHLORO, OR BROMO ARE DISCLOSED. A METHOD FOR PRODUCING THESE COMPOUNDS IS PROVIDED WHICH CONSISTS OF REACTING FOR EXAMPLE A 1,1,2,2-TETRAFLUORO-2NITROSO ETHYL OR LOWER ALKYL ETHER WITH ALCL3IN AN ANHYDROUS SOLVENT AT A TEMPERATURE FROM-10*C. TO 50*C. AND RECOVERING NITROSO DIFLURO ACETYL CHLORIDE AND NITROSO DIFLUORO ACETYL FLUORIDE. THE COMPOUNDS ARE USEFUL CROSSLINKING MONOMERS FOR MAKING POLYMERS WHICH ARE HIGHLY RESISTANT TO OXIDATION AND CORROSION.
Abstract:
Nitroso polymers are provided which are produced by reacting certain nitroso ether monomers. These polymers in turn yield novel polymers by converting, partially or substantially fully, pendant groups in the obtained polymer. The precursor polymers as well as the converted polymers are highly oxidation resistant. Elastomers can be produced directly from the precursor as well as the desired polymer. Liquid as well as solid polymers are provided. These polymers are represented by the following general formulas
The liquid polymers are appropriately chain-terminated with a chain terminator such as chlorine.

WITH N2F4 TO FORM (CF3)2CFNF2 AND DEFLUORINATING THE LATTER PRODUCT WITH FERROCENE TO FORM (CF3)2C=NF. THE COMPOUND (CF3)2C=NF IS USEFUL AS A MONOMER, WHICH FORM COPOLYMERS WITH TETRAFLUOROETHYLENE USEFUL IN PREPARING EXTRUDED AND MOLDED PLASTIC BODIES.
