A headbox comprises an inlet header, 12; a first flat section, 22, connected to the downstream end of the inlet header, and having an unobstructed flow channel in the shape of a rectangular parallelepiped; a plurality of hoses, 36, connected in a transverse row to the downstream end of said flat section; a plurality of expansion pipes, 40, connected in a transverse row respectively to the ends of the hoses, and each having a flow channel of increasing cross-section in the direction of stock flow, 60; a plurality of pipes, 48, of changing crosssection connected in a transverse row respectively to the downstream ends of the expansion pipes, the pipes of changing cross-section having circular cross-section at their upstream ends, and rectangular cross-section at its downstream end; a second flat section, 58, connected to the downstream ends of the pipes of changing cross-section, and having an unobstructed flow channel in the shape of a rectangular parallelopiped, and a nozzle connected to the downstream end of the second flat section. A stock feed system for a paper-making machine has a nozzle for ejecting a jet of paper stock onto the wet end of the machine, and a flow system for delivering a uniform flow of stock to the nozzle, the nozzle comprising first and second substantially rigid lips each having a smooth, flat, generally rectangular surface, and means mounting the lips with the said surface in spaced-apart relation and converging towards the outlet at an angle within the range 5‹-10‹, the angle being substantially uniform across the width of the nozzle but adjustable within the range, and the spacing of the lips being substantially uniform across the nozzle. The second surface may have a second smooth, flat, generally rectangular surface at the outlet of the nozzle which is at a smaller angle than the first-mentioned surface of the second lip to the surface of the first lip. The nozzle may be used in the flow system of Specification 1,253,723.
