A Bi-Pb-Sr-Ba-Ca-Cu-O system superconductor having a composition of: Bi l Pb m Sr p Ba q Ca y Cu z O x wherein l, m, p, q, y and z satisfy the following inequalities: 0.50 0.01 ≦ m ≦ 0.60 0.70 ≦ p ≦ 1.60 0.005 ≦ q ≦ 0.80 0.70 ≦ y ≦ 1.60 1.40 ≦ z ≦ 3.00 which has the critical temperature of at least 77 K and contains the high T c phase in a high fraction.

Plate-like barium ferrite particles with a solid solution of zinc on the surface thereof, suitable for use in magnetic recording media, have an average particle diameter of 0.05 to 0.3 µm, a coercive force of 2.39 × l0⁴ to ll.94 × l0⁴ Am⁻¹ (300 to l,500 Oe) and a magnetization of not less than 55 Am²,/kg (55 emu/g) in a magnetic field of 7.96 x l0⁵ Am⁻¹ (l0 KOe) and which are represented by the following formula (I): BaO.n[Fe 1-2x Co x Ti x )₂O₃] ......... (I) wherein x is from 0 to 0.l and n is from 4 to ll.

Plate-like barium ferrite particles, suitable for use in the preparation of sintered magnets and magnetic recording media, have an average particle diameter of not less than 0.03 µm but less than 0.1 µm and are represented by the following formular (I): wherein x and y are independently from 0.02 to 0.12, n is from 4 to 7, the atomic ratio of Co : Fe(III) is from 0.02 to 0.13 : I and the molar ratio of Ti : Co is from more than 0 to not more than 0.8:1.

Plate-like barium ferrite particles which are suitable for the magnetic material for magnetic recording media and which are represented by the formula (I): wherein x and y are independently from 0.3 to 1.2 and M is a divalent metal selected from Co, Ni, Zn and Mn, are produced by autoclaving at a temperature of 250 to 330°C an aqueous alkaline suspended containing Ba ions, spinel particles which are represented by the formula (II): Fe 12-x-y M x Ti y O 18 wherein x, y and M are as defined above and which have an average particle size of less than 0.1 µm, and a molar excess with respect to the total amount of Fe (III), Ti (IV), M (II) and Ba ions of an alkali metal hydroxide, the atomic ratio of Ba to total amount of the metals in the spinel particles of formula (II) being from 1:8 to 1:10.
