    Abstract: Plate-like barium ferrite particles which are suitable for the magnetic material for magnetic recording media and which are represented by the formula (I):
    wherein x and y are independently from 0.3 to 1.2 and M is a divalent metal selected from Co, Ni, Zn and Mn, are produced by autoclaving at a temperature of 250 to 330°C an aqueous alkaline suspended containing Ba ions, spinel particles which are represented by the formula (II): Fe 12-x-y M x Ti y O 18 wherein x, y and M are as defined above and which have an average particle size of less than 0.1 µm, and a molar excess with respect to the total amount of Fe (III), Ti (IV), M (II) and Ba ions of an alkali metal hydroxide, the atomic ratio of Ba to total amount of the metals in the spinel particles of formula (II) being from 1:8 to 1:10.
