    Abstract: Granules of plastics material have grains of an inert mineral such as sand coated thereon to provide a habitat for microorganisms effective in waste water treatment, the granules having a predetermined particle size range, and the grains having a predetermined particle size range and being disposed at a predetermined packing density range on the granules. The particles have an average density of approximately 1.0 g/cc such that a proportion tend to float and a proportion tend to sink in the waste water. The particles arc manufactured by contacting the granules of plastics material with a mixture of grains of the inert mineral and grains of a soluble substance such as salt, at an elevated temperature, to coat the granules with the mixture, and subsequently dissolving the soluble substance grains from the coating to provide the granules coated with the grains of inert mineral in the predetermined packing density range.

    Abstract: A treatment vessel (50) contains a fluidizable bed (70) of loose particulate material comprising particles of sharp sand adhered to granules of polyethylene to provide a habitat for microorganisms effective in wastewater treatment. The material has a desired density slightly greater than 1.0 g/cc, a specific surface area in excess of 600 m /m , and a particule size range of about 3 mm to 10 mm. The bed and wastewater is fluidized and aerated by air bubbles emitted from self-sealing aerators (71) disposed at the base of the bed and arranged for placement and removal from above the water level. The loose material can rest directly on the aerator surface.

    Abstract: A loose particulate material for use in waste water treatment comprises granules of plastics material carrying weighting material so that the granules have an average density of approximately 1.0g/cc. At least a portion of the weighting material is carried within the granules and the surfaces of the granules are provided with concavities to provide a habitat for organisms effective in waste water treatment.
