Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a polymerizable composition containing a specific vinylic compound and a specified thiol compound in a specific ratio, having a low specific gravity, not generating a malodor on its molding processing, having a high refractive index and a high Abbe number, excellent in transparency, light resistance, impact resistance and hard coat formability, and suitable for optical lenses, etc. CONSTITUTION:This polymerizable composition comprises (A) a vinylic compound of formula I {A is group of formula II [R , R are alkylene, group of formula III (k), (k') are 0-2); X is S, O; (m) is 0-4; (n), (n'), (p) and (p') are 0,1], ect.,}, such as bis(vinylbenzyloxyethyl) sulfide, and (B) a thiol compound having two or more mercapto groups in the molecule such as 1,2-ethanedithiol in a ratio (the number of the vinyl groups in the component A/(the number of the mercapto groups in the component B) of 0.5-20.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a polymerizable composition, comprising a specific vinylbenzyl compound and diphenyl-methyl-pentene and capable of providing a polymer, having a high refractive index without coloring by heating in surface coating and suitable as eyeglass lenses. CONSTITUTION:This polymerizable component comprises (A) 100 pts.wt. vinylbenzyl compound of the formula [R to R are H or halogen; X to X are O or S; (j), (k) and (m) are 0 or 1, with the proviso that (j) is O when (k) is 0; (k) = (j) = O when (m) is 0; X and X are not simultaneously S when (m) = (k) = (j) =1 and (j) is 0] [e.g. 1,2-(vinylphenyl)ethane] and (B) 0.1-20 pts.wt. 2,4-diphenyl-4-methyl-1-pentene. Furthermore, hexaethylene glycol di(meth)acrylate, etc., are preferably blended in this composition so as to afford a polymer good in dyeability, impact resistance, etc.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a new vinylphenyl compound useful as a polymerizable monomer especially for optical materials and for coating compound, ink adhesive, vulcanizing agent for rubber, photosensitive resin, cross-linking agent, etc. CONSTITUTION:A vinylphenyl compound of formula I ((k) and (n) are >=0 integer; (m) 1 or 2) such as 1,3-bis(4,4'-vinylbenzylthio)-2-propanol. The compound of formula I wherein m=1, for example, is obtained by reacting a compound of formula II with epichlorohydrin in the presence of sodium hydroxide. The compound of formula I wherein m=2 is obtained by reacting the compound of formula II with epichlorohydrin in the presence of sodium hydroxide and reacting the reaction mixture with sodium sulfide. The compound of formula I provides a resin having a high refractive index, high Abbe's number, low specific gravity, excellent light resistance and hard coating properties free from an offensive smell during abrasion and molding. The resin is useful as a material for lenses.

The compound can be produced e.g. by the dehydrohalogenation reaction of 1mol of a halogenomethylstyrene of formula IV (X is halogen) with 0.2-1mol of a mercapto alcohol of formula V in the presence of a base (e.g. pyridine) in a solvent (e.g. THF) at 10-60 deg.C.

The compound is generally produced by the dehydrohalogenation reaction of a halogenomethylstyrene of formula II (X is halogen) with a diol of formula III in a solvent (e.g. benzene) in the presence of a base (e.g. pyridine). The reaction is preferably carried out at 10-60 deg.C for 1-48hr by using 0.5mol of the diol of formula III based on 1mol of the compound of formula II and 2-5mol of the base based on 1mol of the diol of formula III.
