Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce the deterioration of a membrane and permit microorganisms to be sterilized by adding a specific organo-chlorine compound into an untreated water. CONSTITUTION:As a sterilizer, there is used at least one member selected from chloramine T, dichloramine T, chloramine B, harazone, chlorodimethylhydantoin, N-chloroacetoanilide, N-dichloroacetoanilide, N-chloronitroacetoanilide and N-chloroacetotoluide. This sterilizer is added to an untreated water before it is passed through an element formed using a reverse osmosis membrane synthesized from polyamides, whereby the growth of microorganisms is suppressed and the fouling of microorganisms is reduced to permit a continuous sterilizing operation for many hours.
