    Abstract: A large-sized columnar body which is formed out of a fiber-reinforced plastic comprising continuous fibers and a resin, and which has three layers (A, B, C) laid in the mentioned order, characterized in that the reinforcing fiber in the B layer is carbon fiber arranged in the lengthwise direction of the columnar body, the fiber in the A layer and C layer being carbon fiber or/and glass fiber arranged at +/-50 to +/-70 degrees with respect to the lengthwise direction of the columnar body. This large-sized columnar body of FRP has a high compressive strength, so that the weight thereof can reduced to below that of a conventional large-sized columnar body. Accordingly, this columnar body is suitable as a primary structural material used as a building material, and for structures, aircrafts and ships.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a carbon fiber tow relatively uniform in adhesivity to matrix resin, thus capable of stabilizing the mechanical properties of the composite materials made by use thereof by subjecting a carbon fiber tow to such surface treatment as to periodically repeat anodization and cathodic reduction via an electrolyte solution. SOLUTION: A carbon fiber tow >=10,000 filaments of single fiber produced by baking acrylic fiber as precursor fiber is introduced into an electrolytic surface treatment unit where the tow is subjected to surface treatment in an electrolyte solution such as aqueous sulfuric acid solution by periodically repeating anodization and cathodic reduction through supplying electricity so that the reduction ratio defined by the relationship: reduction ratio = quantity of electricity for reduction/(quantity of electricity for oxidation + quantity of electricity for reduction) fall within the range 0.001 to 0.5, thus obtaining the objective carbon fiber tow 0.02-0.2 in the surface oxygen concentration: O/C determined by the X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy and

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide the title material in which the adhesiveness of constituent carbon fibers to a constituent heat-resistant resin is improved and which has excellent composite properties.     Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain carbon fibers excellent in adhesiveness to matrix resin by sizing a polycyclic aromatic compound having plural glycidyl ether groups. CONSTITUTION:Preferably, acrylic carbon fibers is subjected to electrolytic oxidation in advance to conduct fiber surface treatment, and then immersed in a liquid containing a sizing agent consisting of a polycyclic aromatic compound having plural glycidyl ether groups, esp. 1,6-naphthalenediglycidyl ether, to impart the carbon fibers with the sizing agent, thus obtaining the objective carbon fibers substantially improved in the adhesiveness to matrix resins (e.g. thermosetting resin such as epoxy resin).

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a carbon fiber that is obtained by compounding a sizing agent composed of a polyamide carboxylic compound having an alkyl group at both terminals with carbon fiber, has excellent capability of bundling, high- order workability and openability, and is useful for prepreg, etc. SOLUTION: This carbon fiber comprises carbon fiber compounded with a sizing agent that has an alkyl group such as stearyl or an aryl group such as phenyl group, and is composed of a polyamidecarboxylic compound such as a polymer of (A) one or more aromatic dianhydrides selected from a group consisting of biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydrides, pyromellitic dianhydrides, oxydiphthalic dianhydrides and benzophenonedicarboxylic anhydrides, and (B) one or more aromatic diamine compounds selected from a group consisting of p- and mphenylenediamines, 4, 4'-oxydianiline, 3, 4'-oxydianiline, and 1, 3-bis (3-aminophenoxy) benzene. Furthermore, it is preferable to produce a prepreg composed of this carbon fiber and a resin such as a thermally resistant resin.
