Abstract: PURPOSE: To prevent thread breaks during a higher-order processing by reducing adhesion amount threads through inhibiting excessive adhesion of a sizing agent to fuzz set areas, etc., by blowing a compressed gas to carbon fiber filaments after applying the sizing agent to the carbon fiber filaments. CONSTITUTION: This method for applying a sizing agent to carbon fiber filaments is to immerse the running carbon fiber filaments 2 in a sizing solution having 0.5-10wt.% concentration and consisting of a urethane resin and an epoxy resin solution or dispersion in a sizing tank through a group of rollers 1 and uniformly apply 0.2-5wt.% sizing agent based on the carbon fiber by blowing compressed gas 5, in 10-48m/sec flow rate, jet from a hole of a compressed gas supplying pipe 4 located >=1cm apart from the running position of the filament 2.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently and continuously producing a carbon fiber for a long period by which, when a carbonizing treatment is carried out in the production of the carbon fiber, the load for threading operation is reduced, and the plugging of a waste gas line caused by a tar component included in a decomposition gas is prevented. SOLUTION: This method for producing the carbon fiber is characterized in that a single furnace having a waste gas-taking out line communicating with a waste gas-burning apparatus, and heated to 300-600 deg.C over the whole gas line is used as a heating furnace when converting a heat-stabilized fiber to the carbon fiber by heating the heat-stabilized fiber in an inert gas atmosphere at a high temperature of 300-1,600 deg.C in the heating furnace.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain carbon fiber capable of oxidizing and carbonizing fiber yarn in just proportion within a short time and largely improving operability and useful for composite materials by interlacing and joining carbonizable fiber yarns, applying an oxidation reaction promoter to the joined part and carbonizing the fiber yarn under specific conditions. SOLUTION: The ends of carbonizable fiber yarn such as acrylic, cellulosic, polyvinyl alcohol-based or pitch-based fiber yarn are superposed in a length of 10-60 cm, preferably 30-40 cm and the fiber yarns are mutually interlaced and joined and then, oxidation reaction promoter of sulfite is applied to the joined part and further, the fiber yarn is subjected to oxidation treatment in an oxidation reaction furnace and carbonized to provide the objective carbon fiber. Furthermore, interlacing of the fiber yarn is preferably carried out by pressurized gas and the oxidation reaction promoter is preferably applied in a range of 15-20 wt.% to the fiber yarn.
