Abstract: 1,124,380. Melt spinning filaments of male screw shape. TOYO RAYON K.K. 9 Aug., 1966 [9 Aug., 1965; 15 Nov., 1965; 22 July, 1966], No. 35659/66. Heading B5B. Synthetic filaments comprise a melt-spinnable synthetic polymer having a male screw shape wherein the ratio (p/d) of the pitch (p) to the outer diameter (d) of the screw thread is in the range of from 0À3 to 15, and the ratio (h/d) of the depth of the thread (h) to outer diameter (d) of the screw thread is in the range of from 0À03 to 0À4. The polymer may be a polyamide such as polyhexamethylene adipamide having a relative viscosity, measured in 98% sulphuric acid at 25‹ C., of 2À2 to 6À0 or a polycaprolactam of relative viscosity, measured as above, of 2 to 9. The filaments may be drawn and thereby molecularly oriented. The p/d value and the h/d value of the filaments is preferably in the range 0À5 to 10 and 0À05 to 0À35 respectively. The filaments may be made by melt-spinning the polymer through the or each extrusion orifice of circular cross-section in a spinneret under an extrusion condition such that the shear stress to which the polymer is subjected during its passage through the or each extrusion orifice of the spinneret is such that with the relative viscosity of the polymer lying within certain limits the extrudate undergoes melt fracture and thereafter contacting the extruded filamentary melt with a liquid which is inert to the polymer and at a temperature sufficiently low to solidify the filamentary melt and fix it in a screw form. The filaments may be made by melt-spinning nylon 66 of relative viscosity 2À2 to 6À0 under extrusion conditions such that the shear stress in the or each extrusion orifice of the spinneret is expressed by the formula:- wherein # r represents the relative viscosity of the polymer and # represents the shear stress expressed in dynes/cm. 2 . The filaments may be made by melt-spinning nylon 6 (polycaprolactam) under extrusion conditions such that the shear stress is The term "melt fracture" is defined as a phenomenon in which the outer shape of an extrudate becomes irregular when a difficultly fusible polymer or a polymer having a very high melt viscosity is melt-extruded through a capillary tube. The shear stress (# w ) is expressed by the formula:- where P represents the extrusion pressure, R is the diameter of the extrusion orifice, L is the length of the orifice, and n is a tube-length compensating coefficient.

Abstract: 1,234,872. Polycaproamide filaments. TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc. 3 Feb., 1969, No. 5787/69. Heading B5B. [Also in Division B8] A method for manufacturing an improved polycaproamide filament yarn comprises making the average moisture content of the yarn below 2À5% at the end of a drawing operation, and immediately after drawing sealing a package of the yarn in a bag made of material having a moisture permeability capable of keeping the average moisture content of the yarn below 2À5%. Thus the yarn may be heated during drawing to make its moisture content below 2À5%, or preferably below 2À0%. Such heating is suitably effected by winding the yarn around a heated roller at least five times. Alternatively, the yarn may be heated after drawing so as to make its moisture content below 2À5%. The bag for sealing the package is suitably made of a film of polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride or polyester. A variety of methods may be used. Thus a moisture content of from 4 to 6% may be bestowed on an undrawn nylon filament yarn, the yarn heated after or simultaneously with the drawing operation so as to make its moisture content less than 2À5%, and the yarn then taken up on to a package while being kept at the lowered moisture content and the package sealed in the bag. Alternatively, the package of the yarn may be placed within an air-conditioned cabinet (e.g. held at 25‹ C. and 75% relative humidity) made of a heat insulating material and provided with only a small slit for inserting the yarn and discharging it from the cabinet and delivering to the drawing stage. After being delivered from the cabinet the yarn is subjected to a drawing operation. The take-up roller of the drawing stage is suitably heated and the yarn wound around the roller several times, suitably at least five times, so as to evaporate excess moisture contained in the yarn. The yarn is then taken up on to a package and immediately thereafter sealed in the bag. The method is especially useful in the direct spinning and drawing process. In such processes, relatively easy and quick moisture absorption of the yarn being manufactured causes frequent yarn breakage during the warping operation in later weaving or knitting preparation steps. By using the method of the present invention in such processes, the number of yarn breakages in warping may be considerably reduced. A typical application in such a process comprises oiling suitably an undrawn filament yarn, drawing the oiled yarn by passing through drawing rollers which are heated so as to evaporate excess moisture contained in the yarn, taking up the drawn yarn on to a package and sealing the package immediately in the bag. Examples are given, in which a polypropylene bag is used, and drawing effected at 30‹ C. to 160‹ C.

Abstract: 1,141,394. Melt spinning slubbed filaments. TOYO RAYON K.K. 9 Aug., 1966 [9 Aug., 1965; 15 Nov., 1965; 22 July, 1966], No. 35661/66. Heading B5B. Slubbed drawn filaments of a melt-spinnable organic synthetic polymer are characterized in that the ratio of the cross-sectional area of the parts (P) of the filaments between the slubs to that of the slubs (Q) is within the range 1: 2 to 1: 15, preferably within the range 1 :4 to 1:10, and the frequency of the slubs is at least one and preferably 2 per 30 mm. length of the filament, said cross-sectional configuration occurring continuously along the length of the filament. The polymer may be a synthetic homopolyamide, a copolyamide, consisting chiefly of polyamide units or a blend of a polyamide with another polymer, the polyamide component predominating. The polymer may be a polyhexamethylene adipamide or a polycaprolactam, the relative viscosities of the polymers at 25‹ C., measured in 98% by weight sulphuric acid being 2À2 to 6À0 and 2 to 9 respectively. The slubbed filaments may be made by meltspinning the polymer under such conditions that the shear stress to which the melt is subjected during its passage through the or each spinneret orifice is such as to cause the formation of melt fracture, the cooling and solidification of the molten extruded filaments being effected by means of a gaseous cooling medium under non-quenching conditions, and subsequently drawing the filaments. The polymer used may be polyhexamethylene adipamide (nylon-6, 6) having a relative viscosity, # r (measured at 25‹ C. in sulphuric acid of 98% by weight concentration) of from 2À2 to 6À0 and the melt spinning conditions may be such as to exert a shear stress within the range defined by the formula 10 7.5 /#r 1.8 ##w#10 6.7 #r 0.87 in which # w ) represents the shear stress (dynes/cm. 2 ). Alternatively the polymer used may be polycaprolactam having a relative viscosity of 2-9, and the melt spinning conditions may be such as to exert a shear stress within the range defined by the formula 10 7.7 /#r 1.8 ## w #2 x 10 7 .
