Abstract: 1301166 Graft polymerization process TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 8 Oct 1970 47811/70 Heading C3G An impact resistant resin is produced by mixing 100 parts by weight of diene rubber particles having a gel content of at least 50% in a latex with more than 10 parts by weight of a monomer composition comprising more than 20% by weight of an aromatic monomer, extracting the diene rubber particles and monomer composition and removing the aqueous phase and bulk polymerizing the extract. The aromatic monomer, e.g. styrene or a substituted styrene may be copolymerized with (meth)- acrylonitrile or an alkyl (meth)acrylate. A grafted rubber latex may be used together with the diene rubber latex. In the examples, (1) polybutadiene is grafted with (a) styrene and acrylonitrile (b) styrene (c) alpha-methyl styrene and acrylonitrile or (d) styrene, acrylonitrile and methyl methacrylate; (2) a mixture of butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber and polybutadiene grafted with styrene and acrylonitrile is grafted with styrene and acrylonitrile and (3) butadiene-styrene rubber is grafted with styrene.
