Abstract: PURPOSE:To relatively easily produce a polycrystalline beta-SiC fiber having strength and elastic modulus comparable to those of carbon fiber and oxidation resistance superior to that of carbon fiber. CONSTITUTION:The objective polycrystalline beta-SiC fiber has a beta-SiC polycrystallization degree continuously decreasing from the surface toward the center of the fiber. It can be produced by reacting a carbonized fiber with Si or SiO2 in argon gas atmosphere under reduced pressure of 10-500mmHg.
