    Abstract: PURPOSE:To directly produce the subject compound useful as an optical resolution agent or a raw material for penicillin antibiotics, etc., from benzoylformic acid without using complicate operations by using a specific microorganism and taking advantage of the reducing power of the microorganism. CONSTITUTION:Benzoylformic acid is treated with cultured product, microbial cell, etc., of a microorganism capable of converting benzoylformic acid to optically active mandelic acid and belonging to the genus Apiotrichum, Candida, Torulopsis, Rhodotorula, Trichosporon, Rhodosporidium, Pichia, Kloechera, Hansenula, Saccharomyces, Klebsiella, Rhodococcus, Microbacterium, Brevibacterium, Corynebacterium, Arthrobacter, Enterobacter, Micrococcus, Alcaligenes, Amycolatopsis, Streptomyces or Nocardioides and the objective compound is separated from the reaction liquid.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a water-soluble, colorless, transparent and odorless preserving agent for cut flower of carnation having excellent freshness retaining effect and freshness prolonging effect, capable of readily treating and harmless to a number of plants, human beings and beasts. CONSTITUTION:A preserving agent for cut flower of carnation containing (+)-2- cis-4-trans-abscisic acid (natural type abscisic acid) extracted and purified from culture mixture of a plant or a microorganism, preferably microorganism belonging to Botrytis cinerea as an active ingredient. The concentration of this agent to be used is 0.01-100ppm, pred., 0.05-10ppm as the active ingredient. Withering of the cut flower of carnation is prevented and it is made possible to enjoy the flower for a long period by using this preserving agent. The above-mentioned active ingredient can safely be used because the ingredient is originally a natural hormone widely contained in plants. The ingredient can provide good preserving effect in a state where the cut flower is inserted and the treatment is simple, because it is not required to restrict absorbing time of the drug.

The objective pyruvic acid is economically produced in high yield by gathering the pyruvic acid from the cultured liquid. The pyruvic acid is an intermediate important for metabolism of an organism, and a synthetic raw material important for various kinds of medicines and agrochemicals, and the need is in expanding state.
