Abstract: A package of carboneous filament strand in the form of a square-end cheese, which is free from "thread dwell" on the shoulders of the package. The package is formed by distributing turning points of the traverse motions in the area near the package ends. Such distribution of the turning points is achieved by repeating two to six kinds of strokes in a cycle of successive traverse motions such as those shown at L and M in Figure 2A, or P, Q and R in Figure 2B. The difference between the maximum and the minimum strokes is preferably within a range of 2% and 20% relative to the maximum stroke.

Abstract: A take-up apparatus for tape type non-twisted carbon fiber bundles F, in which a traverse guide unit 2 consists of an introduction guide roller 21 disposed so that an angle theta 1 between the introduction guide roller 21 and the axial direction of the bobbin is substantially 90 DEG , a final guide roller 2e disposed so that an angle theta e between it and the axial direction of the bobbin is -5 DEG +/-10 DEG , and at least one intermediate guide roller 22, 23, 24 disposed between the introduction guide roller 21 and final guide roller 2e so that an angle difference between an intermediate guide roller 22, 23, 24 and an adjacent guide roller 22, 23, 24 is not more than 45 DEG ; or a take-up apparatus for tape type non-twisted carbon fiber bundles, in which a traverse guide unit 2 has a helically continuing curved guide surface 12, an initial portion, i.e. an introduction surface portion 12a of the curved guide surface 12 extending at substantially right angles to the axial direction of a bobbin, a final portion 12b, i.e. discharge surface portion of the curved guide surface 12 extending at an angle in the range of -5 DEG +/- 10 DEG with respect to the axial direction of the bobbin.

Abstract: A bundle of continuous carbon filament fibers is treated with a sizing agent containing as an active component a water-dispersible resin composition consisting of about 65% to 95% by weight of a water-dispersible urethane compound having at least one epoxy group and at least one quaternary ammonium group and about 5% to 35% by weight of an epoxy resin. The bundle has an excellent fretting resistance, is extremely handleable, and produces a carbon fiber-reinforced composite material having excellent physical properties.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the title package efficiently providing high-quality prepreg, having excellent opening properties, by specifying rigidity of carbon fiber bundle and correlation between yarn width of traverse turn parts of ends of package having wound the yarn bundle and yarn width at the central part of the package. CONSTITUTION:The objective package which is prepared by winding no-twist carbon fiber bundle having >=10cm K value showing rigidity defined by a nearest distance between one face b' of a measuring stand b (theta=90 deg.) and the tip of specimen (a) of carbon fiber bundle fixed to the measuring stand b and has equal correlation between yarn width A of traverse turn parts of ends of package having wound the fiber bundle and yarn width B at the central part of the package. In order to make the yarn width A and the yarn width B equal, winding is preferably carried out by a traverse guide device comprising five roller groups 2-7 having 20 deg. angle from a guide roller 1 transversing in parallel with a shaft of a winding bobbin 8'.

Abstract: PURPOSE:The starting yarns for making carbon fiber are twisted individually, then doubled and made flame resistant and, further the resultant yarns are untwisted into individual yarns and carbonized to produce high-quality carbon fiber with no strength reduction in high productivity. CONSTITUTION:Preferably, starting yarns for carbon fiber such as acrylic fibers, are twisted by means of a creel separately and several of the resulting yarns are doubled into a bundle without twisting. The resultant fiber bundle is sent into the furnace for imparting it flame resistance where the bundle is heated and calcined in an oxidative atmosphere to give a flame resistant fiber bundle. Then, the resulting bundle is separated into two or more bundle to the same number of the yarns. Thus, the separated yarns are carbonized in a non-oxidative atmosphere of such as nitrogen gas or hydrogen gas to produce the objective carbon fiber. The product of the filament denier in the starting fiber and the filament count is 500-30,000 and the twisting number is desirably 5-100/m.
