Abstract: N-heterocyclyl carbamates (I) of formula X.O.CY.N(Z)W are new: (X is 2-naphthyl; 5-indanyl; 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2-naphthyl; 1,4-methane or ethano-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-6 -naphthyl; 2-quinolyl or phenyl substd. by one or more of halo, alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxy, alkenyloxy, alkynyloxy, alkylthio, alkylamino, hydroxy- or alkoxy-alkyl, acyl, nitro, cyano, methylenedioxy or haloalkyl. Y is oxygen or sulphur. Z is alkyl. W is pyridyl substd. by 1 or 2 of halo, alkyl or alkylamino when X is 2-naphthyl, otherwise W is pyridyl or pyrimidyl opt. substd. by 1 or 2 of halo, nitro, alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio or alkylamino. All alkyl etc. are lower). They are made by reacting XOA and B.N(Z).W (B is halo(thio)carbonyl and A is H, or vice versa). (I) are useful as herbicides, esp. against barnyard grass and many of the weeds found in rice paddies, without significant damage to rice. They can also be used to control weed grasses in broad-leaved crops. The usual application is 50-500g per 10 ares.

Abstract: Carbamate derivatives represented by the general formula (I); (I) wherein X is 2-naphthyl, 5-indanyl, 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-2-naphthyl, 1,4-methano-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-6-naphthyl, 1,4-ethano-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-6-naphthyl, 2-quinolyl, or substituted phenyl, Y is an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom, Z is lower alkyl, W is pyridyl or pyrimidyl which is unsubstituted or substituted; process for the preparation of such compounds; and herbicides containing the same as an active ingredient.
