    Abstract: A MOTOR VEHICLE INCLUDES A TRANSVERSELY EXTENDING HINGED COWL PANEL ADJACENT THE LOWER EDGE OF THE WINDSHIELD FOR CONCEALING THEREBELOW THE WINDSHIELD WIPER ARMS AND BLADES WHEN PARKED. THE HINGED COVER OR COWL PANEL IS MOVABLE FROM A CLOSED POSITION WHEN THE WIPER ARE PARKED TO AN OPEN POSITION WHEN THE WIPERS ARE OPERATING. A FLUID PRESSURE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR OSCILLATES THE WIPER ARMS AND BLADES THROUGH A LINKAGE TRANSMISSION. THE MOTOR INCLUDES AN AUXILLARY LINEARLY RECIPROCATING DRIVE SHAFT FOR MOVING THE COWL TO OPEN POSITION WHEN THE WIPER MOTOR IS STARTED BEFORE THE ARMS AND BLADES MOVE OUT OF PARKED POSITION AND TO CLOSED POSITION WITH THE WIPER MOTOR IS SWITCHED OFF FOLLOWING MOVEMENT OF THE WIPER ARMS AND BLADES TO A DEPRESSED PARK POSITION. THE LINERALY RECIPROCATING DRIVE SHAFT IS COUPLED TO THE HINGED COWL PANEL THROUGHT A RELEASABLE COUPLING ASSEMBLY WHICH CAN BE UNCOUPLED TO PERMIT MANUAL MOVEMENT OF THE COWL PANEL TO AN EXTREME OPEN DETENT POSITION FOR ACCESS TO THE EQUIPEMENT STOWED THEREBELOW. THE COUPLING ASSEMBLY IS PROVIDED WITH AN INTERMDIATE DETENT POSITION FOR RETURNING THE COWL TO A POSITION TO PERMIT WIPEROPERATION IN CASE OF FAILURE OF THE COWL RETRACTING MECHANISM.

    Abstract: A ball socket member is formed of yieldable semirigid plastic material, having external ears positioned to engage key slots and internal axially extending lubrication distribution and relief slots positioned in alignment with the ears. The slots terminate at the open edge, the lubricant being retained by a closed cell seal of cellular material. An external circumferential groove receives the periphery of an opening in a linkage member, the periphery being deformed and of the plane of the surface of the linkage to produce an effective thickness approximately the thickness of the groove, providing a method and construction to assure a secure fit in cases where the thickness of the linkage material is either greater than or less than the width of the groove.

    Abstract: A cowl mounted windshield wiper transmission assembly and power unit is pre-assembled as unit. It includes a rigid guide track having a housing secured thereto at each end and a transversely flexible tape slidable in the guide track. Each housing encloses a cam element to which an end of the flexible tape is secured. A pivot shaft for receiving a windshield wiper arm extends axially from the housing. The output of a power unit is coupled to the tape to cause oscillating linear movement of the tape thus resulting in oscillating motion of the pivot shafts and wiper arms.

    Abstract: A longitudinally adjustable lever in the form of a two piece housing mounted for oscillatory motion adjacent one end to the oscillating output of a wiper motor carries at its other end a pivot shaft adapted to receive a wiper arm. A crank arm is mounted on said lever for pivotal motion on an axis coaxial with the axis of the pivot shaft. Adjacent its free end the crank arm is adapted to have a drag link pivotally secured thereto. The free ends of the wiper arm and drag link are pivotally secured to opposite ends by a link element to form a parallelogram linkage. Enclosed within the housing which forms the lever is a rotatably adjustable stationary chain anchor, a sprocket fixed to the pivot shaft for rotation therewith and a drive chain looped around the sprocket extending between the chain anchor and the sprocket for effecting oscillatory movement of the arm pivot shaft relative to the lever when the lever is oscillating about an axis coaxial with the chain anchor. A gear train driven by the sprocket causes rotation of the crank arm relative to the pivot shaft so as to maintain substantially constant angular orientation of the crank arm relative to a fixed line. The longitudinal axis of the drag link and the longitudinal axis of the wiper arm are maintained in parallel relationship so that a wiper blade secured to the end of the wiper arm will produce a substantially rectangular wiping pattern. This is desirable for wiping a windshield which is extremely wide relative to its height.
