Collars, girdles or other garments having parts, e.g. collar points, tending to curve away from the wearer have incorporated therein flexible strip-shaped elements 21, Fig. 1, which extend towards a free edge of such parts and have a contrary curving tendency varying in intensity from a maximum farthest from the free edge to a minimum near the free edge. When used for stiffening collars the flexible elements may be disposed along the edges or diagonally of the collar points and an extra lining, preferably unfused may be used to prevent the stiffeners from showing through unduly. The variable intensity of curving tendency along the length of the stiffener may be obtained by stiching an elastic e.g. rubber strip to a stiffened cotton tape as the tape is fed uniformly while the elastic strip is fed by an eccentric roll, as described and claimed in Specification 768,641.
