Abstract: A cyanobacteria suppression composition includes: (a) a porous body including a plurality of pores; and (b) a growth promoting agent loaded into the pores of the porous body, wherein the growth promoting agent is effective to promote growth of microorganisms that compete with cyanobacteria for resources so as to be effective to suppress growth of the cyanobacteria. A method of preparing the composition and a method of using the composition to prevent harmful cyanobacterial blooms are also disclosed.
