Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce ε-caprolactam useful as a material for nylon at a high conversion rate and with high selectivity by a catalytic gas-phase conversion of cyclohexanone oxime in the presence of an aliphatic alcohol by the use of a specific zeolite as a catalyst. SOLUTION: This ε-caprolactam is produced without decrease in the conversion rate by a catalytic gas-phase conversion of cyclohexanone oxime by the use of L-type zeolite having an atomic Si/Al ratio smaller than 5, preferably an atomic Si/Al ratio of 0.1 or more and less than 5, as a catalyst, in the presence of an aliphatic alcohol, for example, 1-butanol, 1-pentanol, 1-hexanol, 1- heptanol, etc. This type of catalyst can be easily produced at a low cost, and has no structural problem.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain ε-caprolactam useful as a raw material for nylons in high conversion and in high selectivity by reacting cyclohexanone oxime in the presence of a ε type zeolite in a gaseous phase. SOLUTION: This method for producing ε-caprolactam comprises subjecting cyclohexanone oxime to a gaseous phase reaction. Therein, a β-type zeolite capable of being easily produced and large in the diameters of pores is used as a catalyst, and the cyclohexanone oxime vaporized at a weight space velocity of 0.01-100hr preferably 1-10hr , is charged and reacted at 200-500 deg.C. The β-type zeolite is obtained by mixing a Si source and an Al source with an organic ammonium salt as a crystallization-controlling agent, adjusting the pH of the mixture with a proper base or acid, and then subjecting the mixture to a hydrothermal synthesis reaction. The β-zeolite has pore diameters of 5.7Å ×7.5Åsizes and a small control index of 0.6.

SOLUTION: This ε-caprolactam is produced easily using an inexpensive catalyst without decrease in the conversion rate by a catalytic gas-phase conversion of cyclohexanone oxime by the use of ZSM-5 type zeolite having an atomic Si/Al ratio smaller than 100, preferably ZSM-5 type zeolite having an atomic Si/Al ratio of 1-50, as a catalyst, in the presence of a 7C or higher aliphatic alcohol, preferably 1-heptanol, 1-octanol, 1-nonanol, etc., specifically 1-octanol. As a catalyst, mordenite type and Y type of zeolite whose Si/Al ratio is 50 or less, preferably 1-30, may be used.

SOLUTION: This method for producing ε-caprolactam comprises bringing cyclohexanone oxime into a vapor phase contact with β-type zeolite in an alcohol, especially a 5-10C alcohol.
