PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing high purity 2-butyloctanedioic acid (especially containing essentially no 1,10-dodecanedioic acid). SOLUTION: The method for producing 2-butyloctanedioic acid is characterized by (1) esterifying 7-cyanoundecanoic acid and/or 2-butyl-7-cyanoheptanoic acid, (2) separating by distillation an ester of 7-cyanoundecanoic acid and/or an ester of 2-butyl-7-cyanoheptanoic acid from the esterified solution, (3) forming a salt of 2-butyl octanedioic acid by hydrolyzing the ester in the presence of an alkaline compound and (4) forming 2-butyloctanedioic acid by treating the hydrolyzed solution with an acid.
