Abstract: WATER ADDITION TO ENHANCE PHOSPHORIC ACID SALT CATALYST ACTIVITY A method for enhancing tile catalytic activity retention of a phosphorus acid salt catalyst, especially a metal acid phosphate during the production of polyalkylene polyamines from the reaction of a feed of (i) ammonia and/or an allkyleneamine compound having at least two amino groups, such as, ethylenediamine, and (ii) an alkanolamine having at least one amino group, such as, ethanolamine. Sufficient water is utlllzed in the feed to enhance the catalytic activity retention of the phosphorus acid salt catalyst. When a metal acid phosphate catalyst is used, the water keeps the metal acid phosphate in the acidic state and/or returns the metal acid phosphate to the acidic state. The reaction is conducted in tile gas phase, in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of phosphorus acid salt catalyst and at a temperature sufficient to form the polyalkylene polyamines. Also, when the phosphorus acid salt catalyst has sustained a decrease in the activity during the production of polyalkylene polyamine, water can be added in sufficient amount to increase the activity of the catalyst.

Abstract: CONTINUOUS PROCESS FOR PREPARING ALKANOLAMINES A continuous process is provided for preparing alkanolamines having a high yield of monoalkanolamine which comprises continuously reacting a flowing stream of a homogeneous mixture of an alkylene oxide having from two to four carbon atoms and ammonia in a molar ratio of ammonia to alkylene oxide within the range from about 15:1 to about 50:1 maintained in a single supercritical fluid phase in a plug-flow reactor at temperatures above about 100.degree.C and at pressures high enough to maintain the reaction mixture in a single supercritical fluid phase having a density of at least 15 lbs./cu.ft. for the time necessary to form an alkanolamine product mixture containing predominately monoalkanolamine. Abstract: D-14873 CONVERSION OF OXYGEN-CONTAINING POLYAMINES Process for preparing polyalkylene polyamines by contacting an alkanolamine, such as, ethanolamine, and a reactive nitrogen-containing base which is ammonia or a primary or secondary amine, in a first reactor to produce an alkyleneamine, such as, ethylenediamine, and an aminoalkylalkanolamine, such as, aminoethylethanolamine, in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of an amination catalyst and at a temperature and pressure sufficient to form the alkyleneamine and aminoalkylalkanolamine. Then the alkyleneamine, aminoalkylalkanolamine, unreacted alkanolamine and unreacted nitrogen-containing base are reacted in a second reactor to produce the polyalkylene polyamines, such as, diethylenetriamine, in the presence of a catalytically effective amount of an amination catalyst, such as, a reductive amination catalyst or a phosphorus-containing catalyst, and at a temperature and pressure sufficient to form the polyalkylene polyamines. Preferably the phosphorus-containing catalyst is a Group IIIB metal acid phosphate. By controlling the relative amounts of the feed components, one can achieve a desired D-14873 molecular weight distribution and range in the polyalkylene polyamine product. The process has utility in the preparation of cyclic and noncyclic organic amines.

Abstract: There is described a continuous process for the manufacture of ethylenediamine from the products of the reaction of ethylene oxide and ammonia, provision of a continuous recycle stream of monoethanolamine to the products of the reaction of ethylene oxide and ammonia, the amination of such products of the reaction of ethylene oxide and ammonia combined with the monoethanolamine recycle in which the feed stream to the amination reaction zone contains at least 70 weight percent monoethanolamine as well as diethanolamine and triethanolamine, the moles of ammonia provided to the amination reaction exceeds the molar concentration of alcoholic hydroxyl groups present in the amination feed, and the feed to the amination reactor contains at least a 5% increase in the concentration of monoethanolamine over the concentration of monoethanolamine in the reaction product stream from the reaction of ethylene oxide and ammonia.
