Abstract: 860,663. Storing and dispensing liquefied gases. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. March 7, 1958 [March 11, 1957], No. 7349/58. Classes 8(2) and 102(2). Transfer of liquefied gas, e.g. oxygen from a portable insulated container 10, Fig. 1. to a consumer's tank 16 which initially is at a pressure higher than that within the storage container 10 is effected by first equalizing the pressure in containers 10, 16, e.g. by connecting a transfer line 22 to a filling line 21 and allowing a pressure build-up through a check valve 40 in a line 39 leading to the gas space of container 10 sufficient to lift a bellows 46 and hence a valve 41 from its seat at the discharge end of a vaporizing coil 43 embedded in the insulation 15 and drawing from the base of the container ; the vaporized gas traversing the valve 41 being fed to the gas space of the container and serving to discharge liquid therefrom up syphon tube 38 through couplings 22a, 23 and line 21 to the container 16. On completion of the transfer, the coupling 23 is detached and that end of line 22 is coupled to a filling line 19 to effect opening of a normally closed valve 49 and equalization of pressure on oppposite sides of the bellows which is then collapsed by spring 41b and closes the valve 41 which in turn prevents circulation of vapour and possible rise in pressure within the container 10. The filling line 21 of the container 16 extends to the base thereof but has axially spaced slots 48 giving access to the gas space. A gas service line 60 is connected by a heating coil 64 embedded in the insulation 15 to a T- piece 90 which may be supplied either with gas through a line 74 when the pressure in the gas space is sufficient to lift a bellows 86 to open a valve 84 or with liquid forced up a syphon tube 66 and which is vaporized in the coil 64. A portion of this liquid is vaporized in a pressurebuilding coil 96. In a modification the underside of the valve-actuating bellows 46c, Fig. 2 instead of being open to the gas space of the container 10 is connected bv a line 46 to a lateral bore 46e of the coupling socket 25a. The valve 41 is thus opened immediately and the pressure in the gas space of container 10 is raised to the necessary level to effect discharge by vaporization of liquid in the coil 43.
