Abstract: 1423548 Coated products UNION CARBIDE CORP 25 June 1973 [26 June 1972] 30020/73 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A process for preferentially curing the exterior surface of a coating, on a substrate, of a composition containing a photo curable monomer or polymer having at least one polymerisable acrylyl or methacrylyl group comprises exposing said layer under an inert gas atmosphere to a low pressure mercury shortwave ultra violet radiation source, at least 75% of the radiated power being at a wavelength of 2537A, in the presence or absence of a photo sensitiser, (the term "preferentially curing the exterior surface" is used to mean that curing commences on the film surface and the bulk or body of the film subsequently cures (or crosslinks) by further treatment). In various embodiments the specified radiation can be used sequentially, in any order, together with another form of radiation selected from ultra violet radiation from medium pressure mercury lamps; high intensity predominantly continuum light radiation from a swirlflow plasma arc radiation source; radiation from radio active materials; and electron beam radiation. Heating may also be employed. The photocurable composition may optionally include pigments, fillers, stabilisers, and polymers or oligomers. Various (meth)acrylic compounds are listed as the curable component and several examples of photo sensitisers are disclosed, as well as polymeric additives. Curable components used in the Examples are acrylate and methacrylate esters of monohydric and polyhydric alcohols, including such esters as 2- (methyl carbamyl)-ethyl acrylate, dicyclopentenyl acrylate, 2-phenoxyethyl acrylate, pentaerythritol triacrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate and neopentyl glycol diacrylate, acrylate-containing urethane oligomers, and acrylated epoxidised soya bean oil; photosensitisers used are diphenyl ketone, benzoin butyl ether, benzoin methyl ether, 2, 2-diethoxyacetophenone and 2-chlorothioxanthone/methyldiethanolamine. Coatings can be cured on such substrates as paper, glass, fabric, metal coil, wood, metal or plastics panels, floor coverings, composition boards, asbestos panels, electrical conductors and magnet wires.
