Abstract: 1430953 Averaging UNION CARBIDE CORP 30 May 1973 [31 May 1972] 25806/73 Heading G4A The average value of each signal in a sequence of binary coded signals repeated 2 n times is derived by feeding each signal to an adder 116 (Fig. 2) where it is added to the sum of the corresponding signals in each preceding sequence, the adder output being fed to a serial store 110 connected to the adder input, the store being of such length that each stored sum is applied to the adder coincidently with the associated input signal in the next sequence, the final stored sum being shifted by n places to divide the accumulated data by 2 n . The averaged data may be converted to binary coded decimal form and printed. As described the serial store is a shift register but a delay line or magnetic drum may be used. The apparatus is used for averaging signals from an analogue/digital converter (21, Fig. 1, not shown) receiving its input from a photomultiplier (13) measuring the light absorbence of liquid in cuvettes (9), via a logarithmic amplifier and a peak detector. The cuvettes are located in a ring member (4) fixed to a disc (1) controlling a timing function generator (20) which provides clocking pulses for the circuitry. In the embodiment described n = 3 and counter 100 counts the revolutions of the disc which has 30 cuvettes. The analogue/digital converter encodes to 12 bit binary form, the shift register having a length of 30 Î 15 bits, three 0 bits being added in the most significant position to the output of the converter in a reversible register. After eight revolutions of the disc, counter 118 is enabled by the output of revolution counter 100 to apply three shift pulses to the register 110 to effectively divide by 8 before the data is read out. The system may be used for the determination of glucose in blood serum. Copending Application 25805/73 is referred to.

Abstract: Known rotating spectrophotometers have a series of cuvets arranged concentrically around a horizontally rotatable disc so that when the disc is rotated, centrifugal force mixes and transfers reagents and samples to the cuvets. As each cuvet passes a light source, the absorbance of each individual sample is detected and measured photometrically, and is converted to an electrical signal pulse.
