Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method for operating an tangential inlet fuel nozzle at a lean fuel/air ratio in which low NOx and low CO can be achieved without causing unstability of combustion. SOLUTION: First part of combustion air is introduced to the mixing section 28 of a fuel nozzle 10 and the fuel is introduced to the first part of combustion air and mixed therewith. Second part of combustion air is introduced radially inward to the first part of combustion air at the burner inlet port 20 of a scroll swirler 14. Total air flow rate of the first and second part of combustion air is limited and the second part of combustion air is set at 85-89% of the total air flow rate.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the operating life in case that a tangential air inlet fuel nozzle is employed for a gas turbine engine. SOLUTION: A tangential air inlet fuel nozzle 10 has a combustor inlet port 20, which allows air and fuel to flow into a combustor. The port 20 includes a forwardly tapering-off surface 116, a forwardly widening surface 117, and a cylindrical surface 118 extending between the surfaces 116, 117. The surface 116 extends a first distance 126 along the longitudinal axis 26 of the nozzle 10 and the surface 118 extends a second distance 121 along the longitudinal axis 26 and the distance 121 is at least 5% of the distance 126.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prolong the operational lifetime when a central body for tangential inlet fuel nozzle is employed in a gas turbine engine. SOLUTION: The radially outward surface 42 of a central body 10 for tangential inlet fuel nozzle comprises a truncated conical part 44 coaxial with the longitudinal axis 18, and a curved part 46 integral with the truncated conical part 44. The central body 10 comprises a base section 12, an internal passage 20, and a fuel lance 62 and at least one air supply hole 14, 16 extends through the base section 12. The truncated conical part 44 is tapered toward the discharge orifice 40 of the internal passage 20 and terminated in a plane provided with the discharge orifice. The fuel lance 62 is extended coaxially with the longitudinal axis 18 through the base section 12 and terminated in the internal passage 20 so that fuel is imparted to the air flow in the central body.

SOLUTION: Fuel and the air are mixed in the mixing section 28 of a fuel nozzle 10 to produce a fuel/air mixture which is isolated from combustion products by sustaining the axial velocity through the mixing section 28 at a sufficiently high level and combining the face of an internal passage 64 of a central body 12 (supplied or not supplied with fuel) with the face of a burner inlet port 20.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process of forming slender channels having a complex pattern and a small radius of curvature in the thin walls of ceramic matrix composite parts. SOLUTION: The ceramic matrix composite parts with slender cooling channels in the walls are made by inserting decomposable inserts into woven ceramic fiber preforms. Each of the inserts is a tow of continuous carbon fibers enclosed with a carbonaceous filler and the inserts are inserted in positions in which channels are required. The preforms with the inserts in the prescribed positions are disposed in molding tools. A ceramic matrix material is added and the fiber preforms are united with the ceramic matrix material. The united parts are then heated to thermally decompose the inserts and to form slender channels in the parts. The inserts are flexible and can be woven in the preforms using an automatic loom or have limited flexibility and can be inserted by machine or by hand.

The fuel lance 62 is extended through the base section 12, the inner chamber 58 and the swirler 60 before being terminated in the internal passage 20.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To displace a flame moved to a mixing region of a fuel nozzle by reducing a trend of stabilizing a burning flame in the nozzle. SOLUTION: Air inlet slots 36, 38 are formed between superposed ends of two offset cylindrical arc-like scroll members 22, 24 of a tangential air inlet fuel nozzle 10. An end plate 18 has a combustor inlet port 20, and the other end plate 16 seals a flowing region of the nozzle. The members 22, 24 are fixed between the end plates. A central body 12 is provided between the members coaxial with a longitudinal axis 26. The body has a base 58 and an inner passage 64. The base 58 has at least one air supply hole extended through the base. The body 12 has a truncated conical part 86 and an aerodynamic ramp, which prevent backflow and flame stability between the end plates.
