Abstract: A coolant nozzle (42) is used on a machine tool having a rotating bit (22) of convoluted longitudinal profile for cutting a number of slots (30) in a disk (34). The nozzle (42) includes at least one coolant inlet (82,84) and at least one coolant outlet (78,79). The coolant outlet (78,79) has a convoluted section and is positioned to direct a coolant stream tangentially at the bit (22) in a direction of rotation of the bit. Internal surface portions of the nozzle define one or more passageways between the inlet (82,84) and the outlet(s) (78,79).

Abstract: A quill (10) to be used to superabrasively machine complex shapes, such as airfoil shapes, into a substrate has a shaft portion (12), an enlarged head portion (14) adjacent the shaft portion (12), and a tapered grinding portion (16) adjacent the enlarged head portion (14). The tapered grinding portion (16) has a layer of grit material (24) selected from the group consisting of diamonds and cubic boron nitride thereon. In a preferred embodiment, the quill (10) is a vitrified or plated cubic boron nitride quill on the grinding portion (16). A method of using the tool is also disclosed.
