    Abstract: Clearance between blade tips and an annular shroud is controlled by enhancing the thermal response of the engine case and annular shroud during the transient response period following a step change in engine power. A temporary reduction or elimination of the flow of cooling air supplied to the engine case by the active clearance control system ensures that the radius rs of the case follows curve 34 instead of curve 32 leading to an increased minimum clearance delta min. Substituting a flow of relatively warm air for the cooling air leads to a further increase in the response of the case (curve 36) and a further increase in delta min.
