Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reinforcing material which is applicable to a surface of a complicated shape and is highly resistant against erosion. SOLUTION: An erosion-resistant material 10 has an elastomer 12 layer and a fiber-reinforced material 14 layer. The fiber-reinforced material 14 is substantially reinforced with a fiber and an uncured elastomer 12 is supported or reinforced with the fiber-reinforcing material 14. In manufacturing, this uncured elastomer 12 and the fiber-reinforced material 14 are thermally pressed at temperatures higher than the fluidization point of the elastomer 12 and lower than the curing point, i.e., curing temperature of the elastomer 12, and at a pressure high enough to cause the heated uncured elastomer to flow into the fiber-reinforced material.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a coating system for engine components which exhibits improved erosion resistance and a method for forming the coating system on the engine components. The coating system is formed by a fluororelastomeric material which is co-cured or bonded with the organic matrix material forming the engine component. The coating system is applied to the engine component by overlaying a thin sheet of the fluoroelastomeric material in a cured or uncured state over a preform of the engine component, placing the preform and the fluoroelastomeric material in a molding device, and heating the engine component preform and the fluoroelastomeric material to a temperature at or above about 340 DEG F to effect co-curing and/or bonding.
Abstract:
A method for preparing an uncured supported elastomer material includes the steps of: providing a fibrous reinforcement material; providing a layer of uncured elastomer material substantially adjacent to the fibrous reinforcement material; exposing the layer and the fibrous reinforcement to a temperature below a curing temperature and above a flow point of the uncured elastomer material, and a pressure sufficient that the uncured elastomer material flows into the fibrous reinforcement material, so as to provide an uncured supported elastomer material.
