Abstract: 1,225,653. Interlaced yarn. NIPPON RAYON K.K. 6 June, 1968 [6 June, 1967], No. 27083/68. Headings D1F and D1W. A pneumatically bundled yarn of variable twist is formed from at least three monofilaments F 1 , F 2 , F 3 .. which form a plurality of repeating units, each of which comprises sections A, C twisted in the S and Z directions and separated by a section B of no twist, each of the twisted sections A, C comprising a) at least one subsection a, a 2 .. formed from at least two monofilaments twisted in the same direction as the section and b) at least one monofilament being at least partly entwisted with at least one other monofilament to form the subsection. The filaments may be of viscose rayon, cellulose acetate, a polyamide, a polyester, a polyacrylonitrile, a polyolefine or a polyvinyl alcohol or a mixture thereof. A process for producing the above yarn comprises linearly advancing under tension at least three monofilaments having no twist through a steady spiral stream of an innocuous fluid, the monofilaments being advanced into the stream in axial alignment with the axis of the stream. The fluid is preferably air, nitrogen, or steam. The tension of the filaments is preferably in the range 0.01-0.5 gm./denier. In a preferred embodiment the monofilaments are wetted with water or an aqueous solution of a surface active agent prior to treatment in the spiral stream. Apparatus for carrying out the process comprises means for supplying fluid under pressure to the interior of one end of a helically twisted pipe 12, means for advancing yarn into the same end of the pipe, and yarn guide means, preferably in the form of a tube extending into the opening of the pipe, for guiding the yarn into the pipe 12 in axial alignment with the axis of the pipe, which axis is a straight line. The pipe is preferably of elliptical cross-section, has a length of 2-30 cm. and a pitch of 1-20/10 cm. The cross-sectional area of the pipe preferably satisfies the condition: 1.1 #b/a #10 where a and b are respectively the minimum and maximum distance between the axis of the pipe and the inner wall thereof.
