SOLUTION: A command key (12) of a remote control device has an appliance operating function and an address of an information source mapped thereto. When the command key (12) is activated, a program performs the operation and also initiates the retrieval of information from the information source using the address.

Abstract: A user registers with a Web site to enable the downloading of an electronic program guide ("EPG") (40) to a portable device. The downloaded and displayable EPG includes a listing of programs from which the user may selec t a program interest (48).
