Abstract: A broadband polarization scrambler comprising a retarder material layer having a plurality of through-thickness zones extending through the thickness of the layer, each zone configured to alter the polarization state of light passing through the layer differently than each adjacent zone whilst retaining the circular polarization of at least a portion of incoming circularly polarized light.
