Abstract: A microwavable thermal energy storage material is provided which includes a mixture of a phase change material and silica, and a carbon black additive in the form of a conformable dry powder of phase change material/silica/carbon black, or solid pellets, films, fibers, moldings or strands of phase change material/high density polyethylene/ethylene-vinyl acetate/silica/carbon black which allows the phase change material to be rapidly heated in a microwave oven. The carbon black additive, which is preferably an electrically conductive carbon black, may be added in low concentrations of from 0.5 to 15% by weight, and may be used to tailor the heating times of the phase change material as desired. The microwavable thermal energy storage material can be used in food serving applications such as tableware items or pizza warmers, and in medical wraps and garments.

Abstract: Composite comprises a solidified melt mixt. contg.; (a) 15-22 wt.% polyolefin resin selected from uncrosslinked HDPE and polypropylene; (b) 7-12 wt.% ethylene copolymer selected from ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer and ethylene-(m)ethyl acrylate copolymer; (c) 7-16 wt.% silica particles having a surface area of 50-500 m2g and prim. particle sizes of 0.005-0.025mu m; and (d) 55-60 wt.% phase change material selected from crystalline alkyl hydrocarbons, crystalline fatty acids, crystalline fatty acid ester, crystalline 1-olefins, crystalline prim. alcohols, crystalline alicyclic hydrocarbons and crystalline aromatic hydrocarbons. Also claimed is prepn. of such a composite comprising melting (d), stirring (c) into the melted (d) until a stiff gel is formed, adding (a) and (b), heated to melt (a) and (b), a mixing vigorously to form a uniform viscous gel, cooling and gel to solidify it into a mouldable composite, and forming the mouldable composite into a shape useful for thermal energy storage.
