Abstract:
Fluid concentrates, colorants and coating compositions contain solid pigment particles dispersed in a nonvolatilizing, reactive liquid diluent having a viscosity less than 1,000 cps and containing at least one molecular species having at least three reactive unsaturated sites. The reactive liquid diluent may serve as one or more of a dispersing medium for the solid pigment particles, a carrier, a coalescent and a humectant, and may crosslink or otherwise cure to form an interpenetrating polymer network in, or crosslink with, a pigmented coating composition containing a film-forming polymeric binder. Embodiments of the reactive liquid diluent can provide colorants and coating compositions having reduced levels of VOCs, conventional carriers, conventional dispersants, conventional coalescents and conventional humectants.
Abstract:
A universal colorant composition for both solvent- and water-based paints and coatings. The universal colorant composition is a composition which includes a colorant component, such as pigment, dye, colorant, tinting agent and/or metal effect agent; a surfactant package including at least one alkyd-compatible surfactant; and at least one latex-compatible surfactant; and when the surfactant package is added to a base paint it provides a mixture having a drop in viscosity of less than about (50%).
Abstract:
A low VOC composition, system and method for tinting a base paint, either in- store or in a manufacturing or factory setting. The colorant composition includes a pigment dispersion, a non-volatile coalescent, and optionally, a humectant. The colorant may provide reduced VOC levels and reduced susceptibility to tip drying. Coalescent levels in the base paint may be reduced or eliminated. The tinted paints may provide improved mechanical characteristics, including superior block and tack resistance, and reduced viscosity drop, relative to conventional paint formulations.
Abstract:
White-pigmented and unpigmented base paints and stains are custom-tinted using an automated colorant dispenser having a minimum fluid dispensing quantity less than 0.01 fluid ounce ( 3 ) and an array of colorants including a green-hued colorant having a color strength greater than that of a comparison colorant containing 12 wt. % PG7 pigment, a blue-hued colorant having a color strength greater than that of a comparison colorant containing 7 wt. % PB 15:2 pigment, and a red-hued colorant having a color strength greater than that of a comparison colorant containing 17 wt. % PR209 pigment. The green-hued or blue-hued colorants are dispensed into the base paint or stain whenever a green-hued or blue-hued tint is required. Light pastel tints in small containers and strong colors in large containers may be prepared without requiring the use of additional colorants having the same general hue and lower color strength.
