Abstract: In an electric arc furnace for producing steel by melting down scrap 27, in particular scrap iron and/or spongy iron and/or pig iron as well as additives, in a furnace vessel 1, at least one graphite electrode 11 which can be shifted in its longitudinal direction projects into the furnace vessel, an arc 26 being struck between the graphite electrode 11 and the charging material 27. To achieve an especially high input of energy, the graphite electrode 11 projects into a bottom part 8 of the furnace vessel 1 from the side, and the bottom part 8, in the region of the graphite electrode 11, has a widened portion 8, 9 projecting radially outwards relative to the top part 10.

To achieve a particularly high energy input - the graphite electrode (11) projects into a lower part (8) of the furnace vessel (1) from the side and - in the region of the graphite electrode (11), the lower part (8) has a widened portion (8, 9) projecting radially outwards relative to the upper part (10) (Fig. 1).
