Abstract:
Method and apparatus for voice traffic management in a data network includes establishing a default maximum bandwidth setting at a LAN egress port when voice-type traffic is not present in a LAN portion of the data network, detecting voice-type traffic, reducing the bandwidth setting at the LAN egress port to effect a change in a rate of non voice type traffic and monitoring non voice type traffic and voice quality statistics to determine if the rate of non voice type traffic entering the data network has changed. Once the desired change has occurred, performing a linear increase of the bandwidth setting at the LAN egress port to a first value while monitoring voice quality statistics, determining if voice quality has degraded during increase of the bandwidth setting and repeating the last two steps if voice quality has not degraded.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for testing in a communication network is described. One example of the invention relates to a method of testing in a voice over internet protocol (VOIP) network. At least one test script is obtained from the VOIP network at an enhanced terminal adapter. The enhanced terminal adapter is configured to couple at least one communication device to the VOIP network. The at least one test script is executed within a scripting framework of the enhanced terminal adapter to interact with at least one component coupled to the VOIP network. Results of the execution of the at least one test script are transmitted from the enhanced terminal adapter to the VOIP network.
Abstract:
Method for automatically managing a telecommunication service for telecommunication service user includes detecting a telecommunication device associated with the telecommunication service user on a network, determining an activation state of the telecommunication service based on data regarding the detected telecommunication device, determining an account/device state based on data regarding the detected telecommunication device and executing a management process between the telecommunication device and the telecommunication service to alter either the device state or the user account status based on the data regarding the detected device. The executing step includes automatically invoking an action that minimizes the necessary user interaction to initialize, update or access the service. Such service can be VoIP, instant messaging, and combination of these services or others.

Abstract:
Apparatus for converting a local POTS network to VoIP capability includes a signal controller that is adapted for connection between a broadband-enhanced POTS service point and the local network for reducing POTS signaling. The apparatus is, for example, a high pass filter that includes a first port for receiving broadband-enhanced POTS service and a second port for sending DSL signals to the local network. The high pass filter can be connected to broadband-enhanced POTS service at a Network Interface Unit of a DSL subscriber location. Preferably, the high pass filter has a frequency response range that is capable of greatly reducing or eliminating a POTS service loop voltage and/or baseband voice signals on the local network.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for providing and using a telephone calling card are described. In one example, a planar body incudes a memory system, a dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) generator, and a speaker. The memory system is configured to store identification data for allowing a user to place a telephone call. The DTMF generator is coupled to the memory system and is configured to generate password-protected DTMF tones to convey the identification data. The speaker is coupled to the DTMF generator and is configured to emit the DTMF tones. The DTMF tones may be played into a telephone for making a call using the telephone calling card apparatus. Since the identification data is played into the telephone and password-protected, rather than being manually entered by the user, the identification data is less susceptible to unauthorized disclosure and thus less susceptible to fraudulent use.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for fulfilling information requests (such as information retrieval or consolidation and name address translation) that adapts to a highly scalable server and/or network architecture. Used for determining the location of a server and/or services based on an account number, a phone number, a service identifier or any other identifier or a combination of such identifiers. The services could be voice mail, email, speech to text, conference calling, video and/or some other type of customer based feature service such as sending commands to customer specified devices located on their LAN/WAN or some other accessible LAN/WAN. Use of a directory name server (DNS) or any other address translation service (e.g., a DB service) is not required. The name translation is done autonomously within a process by a modulus operation of identifiers and network components associated with the information request.
