    Abstract: 1304539 Making metal drums, stretchbending, seaming WALLACE EXPANDING MACHINES Inc 24 July 1970 [25 July 1969] 36005/70 Headings B3A B3E B3J B3Q [Also in Division B8] A rectangular tubular body section 26c of a metal drum having an intermediate peripherallyextending lifting recess 35 and strengthening gussets 36 is formed by shaping a sheet metal tube between an outer die 201 and an inner expandible die 205, 206. The inner die is radially expanded or contracted between upper and lower guide plates 215, 216 by an axially movable wedge 217 on actuation of an hydraulic cylinder (not shown). A bottom drum end panel 25 is secured to the lower end of the body section by rolling inwardly together the upstanding portions 45A, 46A of co-operating L- shaped rims. The rims may be rolled between an axially-movable ring 236 having a curling recess 247 and a split support collar 235. The drum top panel may also be roll-seamed to the body section, Figs. 8 and 21 (not shown). Alternatively, the top panel is secured to the body section by crimping the outer leg 40B of an inverted U-shaped panel rim 40 under the upstanding leg 37A of an L-shaped body rim 37 with the interposition of a gasket 41, Fig. 2. A manual crimping tool, Fig. 4 (not shown) may be used. The panel may be subsequently removed by use of a manual decrimping tool, Fig. 5 (not shown).

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming metal wheel assemblies having a rim and attached spider. A pair of outer dies complementary to the final radial form of the wheel rim are moved together to enclose an annular metal workpiece. A pair of horizontally opposed conical dies are then moved interiorly of the outer dies and annular workpiece. Each conical die has an annular stuffing ledge which contacts the edge of the workpiece. Force is then exerted against the workpiece edges so as to plastically regenerate the workpiece between the conical dies and outer dies; thus, providing thickening of the material in desired areas. A spider extending across the workpiece is axially loaded with the conical dies causing plastic deformation of the spider. A center rod mounted to and projecting from one of the conical dies is concentric with the conical dies and extends through the spider as the spider plastically deforms therearound. A groove formed in one of the conical dies forms a seating ridge in the spider which is defined by a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the wheel rim. A plurality of seating bosses are formed into the spider by the conical dies.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing coiled sheets of metal. The metal is uncoiled, flattened, stretched, sheared and stacked by a continuous in line apparatus. Grippers which hold the sheet during the stretching operation open to allow the metal to pass through in a continuous sheet; thus, alleviating the necessity for transfer of the sheet to an additional processing apparatus.

    Abstract: A container having an expanded rectangular tubular body section and a pair of opposing end panel sections. The body section includes a peripheral recess which facilitates lifting the container by, for example, the arms of a fork lift truck. For strengthening purposes the body section incorporates a plurality of gussets which are adjacent to the edge of said lifting recess. Such containers are adapted to stack one upon another by means of the complementary configurations of the two end panel sections. The end sections are secured to the body section by means of crimping or by a curled lock seam. In one embodiment of the invention crimping and decrimping of one end may be effected my means of crimping and decrimping tools having C-shaped heads which are adapted to engage the outer leg of a U-shaped rim.
