Abstract: A ball dropping assembly for dropping a plurality of objects, such as spherical balls, into a wellbore. The assembly first comprises a seat for retaining a ball before it is released. The assembly also comprises a ball-feeding channel for feeding additional balls onto the seat. A ball-retaining lever is provided to selectively receive and retain balls onto the seat, and then to release the balls individually into the wellbore. In one embodiment, the assembly is attached to a side bore in fluid communication with a main bore in a cementing head. The ball-retaining lever rotates into the bore when releasing a ball. When a plug is released into the bore from a cementing head, the plug will trip the lever, causing the ball-retaining lever to rotate back towards the ball-retained position. Thus, the ball dropping assembly also serves as a plug release indicator.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for obstructing the passage of fluid within a fluid flow conduit and subsequently reconfiguring the tool to allow substantially full- bore passage therethrough. Pressure developed upstream of the obstruction can be utilized to operate pressure actuated tools such as liner hangers. Equipment used in subsequent wellbore operations such as drill pipe darts can pass undamaged through the opened port. In an embodiment, the flow through a tubular is obstructed by placing a ball on an expandable ball seat, developing a pressure differential across the ball seat, equalizing the pressure after the hydraulically actuated tool completes its function, and mechanically manipulating the drill string to open the expandable ball seat and allow the ball to pass through.

Abstract: A connector arrangement used for connecting and locking tubular members. The connector consists of two tubular members and a coupling member. The tubular members are threaded together to create a threaded connection. The locking arrangement is provided by a pathway formed on the tubular member whereby a locking member can be inserted in to the pathway to lock the threaded connection. The locking arrangement is also provided by a plurality of castellation members disposed on each tubular member. The connector also has a separate coupling member which has opposite right-hand and left-hand threaded ends to threadedly mate with the threads of the two tubular members.

Abstract: An expandable packer 318 comprises elastomeric 346A, B and non-elastomeric (preferably a metallic component) 344A, B, C sealing elements. The expandable packer 318 is constructed from a non-eleastomeric tubular body 340 having a frustoconical shaped inner surface 352A for contacting a wedge 308; a hollow mid section forming voids / cavities 358A, B; and a smooth outer surface 342 for carrying the elastomeric seals 346A, B. Upon activation, the wedge 308 expands the packer 318 and causing it to contact a casing 106. The expansion process forces the voids / cavities 358A, B to collapse to allow elastomeric seals 346A, B to sit within the tubular body 340 so that both the elastomeric 346A, B and non-elastomeric 344A, B, C sealing elements contact the casing 106.

Abstract: Apparatus for anchoring tools in a wellbore comprises an expandable cone 102 having an integral shoulder 140, a recess 106 on the cone surface and a slip 104 located in the recess. Axial travel of the slip is limited by the shoulder. In an alternative embodiment, a wedge shaped gap 108 may also be provided in the cone, along with a wedge shaped member 116 in the gap, the member featuring the same recess, shoulder and slip arrangement as the cone. Also disclosed is a method of anchoring a wellbore by radially expanding a cone with a wedge shaped gap by urging a wedge shaped member through the gap. Alternatively, the cone can be compressed, the wedge shaped member fixed to the cone to hold the cone in compression during run in to the hole, before force is applied to the member to break the connection.
