Abstract: A detector 60 and method of use thereof, for use in cementing a tubular string in a wellbore comprising a tubular mandrel 62, an electronics package 64 fastened to an outer surface of the mandrel, a first transducer 67t fastened to the mandrel outer surface and in communication with the electronics package, operable to generate ultrasonic pulses, a second transducer 67r fastened to the mandrel outer surface, in communication with the electronics package, and operable to receive the ultrasonic pulses, and an antenna 66 fastened to the mandrel outer surface and in communication with the electronics package. The detector may furthermore be located in a cementing head 7 (fig 3A), which may include a launcher operable to hold a plug 59 (fig 3A) retained therein, wherein the ultrasonic transducer detectors monitor launching of the plug from the cementing head by fluid flow.
