Abstract: In a steam turbine driven pump installation, the steam flow to the turbine is controlled by a combined stop and throttle valve which includes a power operated actuator so as to vary the output of the pump, and a speed feed-back control is provided for the turbine comprising an indicator issuing a signal corresponding to the turbine speed, and a comparator comparing the speed signal with a desired value and delivering a control signal based on the comparison to a servo-device of the valve actuator for adjustment of the valve whereby turbine speed may be maintained constant. Additionally the installation includes an emergency control respondent to operating conditions in the installation e.g. turbine overspeed, oil pressure etc., the emergency control including a switch in the power supply to the valve actuator whereby in the event of the operating condition being unsatisfactory the switch is opened to close the steam valve.

Abstract: A control system for a pump installation comprising a primary feed back circuit including sensors measuring the fluid discharge pressure of the pump and possibly additionally the fluid flow in the pump discharge and regulating the speed of the pump drive to control said discharge pressure in dependence for example on the pressure requirements of boiler feed, and including additionally a secondary feed back circuit sensing further operating conditions in the pump installation e.g. water and oil pressures. The primary circuit delivers a speed control signal for actuation of control valve means of the pump drive which may be for example a steam turbine, and the secondary circuit is coupled to a gate of the primary circuit whereby in the event of any of the further conditions being unsatisfactory the control signal is interrupted and the pump stopped.

Abstract: 1294090 Feedwater apparatus WEIR PUMPS Ltd 5 Dec 1969 [17 Dec 1968] 59905/68 Heading F4A Apparatus for deaerating boiler feedwater comprises a single module including means 10, 4 for supplying water to a deaerating chamber 6, in which it is heated approximately to boiling point, and means for cooling water extracted from the chamber 6 and supplying it to a boiler. The water supply to a storage tank 2 is regulated by a valve 3 controlled by a water level sensing device 2a. From the tank 2 water passes to the deaerating chamber via a conduit 10 and steam-operated injector 4, and is heated to boiling point by steam entering the chamber 6 through line 7. A valve 5 sensitive to the water level in the chamber 6 controls the steam entering the injector through line 12. Deaerated water leaves the chamber through conduit 13 and is cooled by heat exchange with water in conduit 10 to a temperature commensurate with the vapour pressure required by the multi-stage boiler feed pump 9,

Abstract: Rotary pump has a return line (11) connecting the housing (2) with the pump inlet (5), through which line leakage is taken from the housing at reduced pressure and returned to the inlet via a cooler, as in 2217292. The return line leads to a duct (22) which enters the pump inlet in a direction with an axial component. The duct may enter immediately adjacent to the impeller hub (8). There may be a chamber (18) upstream of the duct to reduce the velocity of flow of the leakage fluid. This may be an annular chamber surrounding the impeller shaft (4) at the pump inlet end whilst the duct is a conical annular gap.
