Abstract: HEARD-7 16. CONDUCTOR INSULATED WITH PULP OVER A CELLULAR LAYER A pulp-insulated conductor having excellent dielectric properties notwithstanding a substantially reduced diameter includes an electrical conductor enclosed in an insulative cover comprising a pulpous material and a layer having an effectively cellular structure interposed between the electrical conductor and the pulpous material. The pulpous material has a relatively low moisture content and is disposed concentrically about the conductor. The interposed layer includes a coating comprising a material which when covered with the pulpous material is capable of creating an adhesive bond between the pulpous material and the conductor to form an insulative cover having substantial integrity, with the coating having a cellular structure when the pulpous material is adhered to the conductor.

Abstract: DURR-22-9 PULP-INSULATED CONDUCTOR CABLE A cable of this invention substantially increases the number of pulp-insulated conductor pairs per unit of cable cross-sectional area. This permits a reduction in the outside diameter of a cable without reducing the number of conductor pairs or an increase in the number of pairs in a given area such as in an existing underground duct by utilizing substantially more of the cross-sectional area of the duct than had been used in the past. Each pulp-insulated conductor includes a metallic conductor enclosed in a composite insulative cover which has a controlled dielectric constant and which comprises a pulpous material and a coated layer of adhesive material interposed between the conductor and the pulpous material. The coated layer causes the pulpous material to adhere to the conductor with substantial integrity so that the moisture content of the pulpous material can be reduced over that achieved in prior art processes. This results in a smaller cross-section of each pulp-insulated conductor which allows the use of an increased number of conductive pairs in a given cable cross-section and without any significant increase in mutual capacitance characteristics of the insulated conductor pairs. A cable system for providing an increased number of conductor pairs in an existing duct includes a cable of this invention and a pulling eye attached to an end portion of the cable with the diameter of the cable and of the pulling eye being substantially equal.

Abstract: An extruder for thermoplastic material has a screw of a compression relief design for advancing and working the thermoplastic material to produce an extrudate at a more uniform temperature and with a more thorough mixing of thermoplastic materials than has been achieved in the past. A metering section of the screw is provided with pins for homogenizing the thermoplastic material with all of the pins in any one portion of the screw being arranged in a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the extruder screw and directed radially outward from the axis of rotation. A helical flight formed on the extruder screw is uninterrupted in at least the metering portion of the screw.

Abstract: 1383849 Impregnating cables WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 18 April 1972 [19 April 1971] 17842/72 Heading D1L In a method for filling the interstices of a stranded cable with a waterproofing compound the cable 2 is fed through an impregnation housing 7 comprising chambers 8 and 9, the waterproofing 'compound 3 being passed under pressure through the housing to cause, assist or retard the longitudinal movement of the cable through the housing 7, the pressure in the upstream chamber 9 being less than that in chamber 8. As illustrated the apparatus includes axially aligned inlet and outlet dies 12, partition wall 10 separating chambers 8 and 9 and transverse bores 18, 19 and 16, 17 for passing the waterproofing compound into and out of chambers 9 and 8 respectively. In operation waterproofing compound 3 is fed from supply tank 6 to inlet 16 of chamber 8 by pump 5 and passes through the chamber in the direction of movement of cable 2 to outlet 17. Outlet 17 is connected via conduit 21 to inlet 18 of chamber 9 the outlet 19 of which returns excess waterproofing compound to supply tank 6. In this way movement of cable 2 is assisted or caused by the movement of pressurised water proofing compound through the housing 7, the pressure exerted on the cable 2 being greater in the downstream chamber 8 then the upstream chamber 9. The direction of flow of the compound 3 may be reversed if retardation of the cable 2 by the viscous drag of the compound is required. Wiping die 4 is provided downstream of the cable outlet of housing 7 to remove excess waterproofing compound. Where more than two successive chambers are used to effect impregnation the pressure of the impregnating liquid is made to increase from station to station in the direction of movement of the cable.
