Abstract: Described is apparatus, employing a mathematical transform involving addition and differencing only, for recognizing patterns or characters which can be distorted or misaligned with respect to optical-sensing means without any sacrifice in the accuracy of the device. When executed on a digital computer, the mathematical transform utilized in accordance with the invention needs only a fraction of the computation time needed for transforms utilized by prior art devices. At the same time, it is better able to cope with certain distortions that are characteristic of hand-printed letters and digits such as inclination, small rotation and the like.

Abstract: The use of electronically tunable filters permit an efficient extraction of characteristic speech features, such as pitch frequency and the position of spectral peaks, called formants, that are present in vowels and voiced consonants. A pair of electronically tunable active filters each controlled for CF and Q, are utilized to "lock in" on a particular formant and to follow its inflections. The control voltage supplied to the active filters directly corresponds to the formant position and gives an inexpensive and simple technique for the characterization of voiced phonemes.

Abstract: Classification of a subject is effected by a learning matrix whose adaptive elements are minstors disposed in columns and rows. A different pattern of stored comparison characteristics is impressed as respective flat-band voltages on the minstors of each row of the matrix. Voltages corresponding to the actual characteristics of the subject are impressed each along a column of the matrix. Assuming there are m rows and n columns and regarding the parameters impressed on each row as an n dimensional vector, the comparison of the actual characteristics with each pattern of comparison characteristics is effected by comparing, for each row, either the angle between these vectors or the Euclidean distance between the vectors.
