Abstract: Nanoimprint lithography forms a microfeature array on a substrate responsive to inkjet printing techniques for high resolution printing of circuit elements and other features with highly accurate fidelity to predetermined boundaries. The microfeature array is defined by micropillars formed between intersecting microchannels in the substrate. The micropillars are responsive to a sequence of ink droplets in a highly controlled and predictable manner based on the droplet volume, droplet spacing and temperature. The flow of liquid ink is restrained by the micropillars for pinning the ink for avoiding uncontrolled ink flow as occurs on a flat surface. Subsequent layers of deposited ink tend to follow pining of previous layers, allowing an iterative buildup of layers for forming a trace of sufficient thickness and a high aspect ratio allowing traces extending above the depth of the microchannels for aiding communication with surface mount components.

Abstract: A fiber optic sensing device includes an optical fiber having a polished end defining a flat sensory portion coated with a lossy-mode-resonance (LMR) coating. A reflective coating on an end face of the optical fiber facilitates propagation of a return signal. An optic circuit for identifies a wavelength attenuated by the LMR coating from the return signal reflected by the reflective coating based on a moisture presence at the sensory portion. Various gaseous parameters may be detected based on the coating on the sensory portion. An LMR coating of tin oxide (SnO2) is employed for moisture sensing.

Abstract: A superhydrophobic surface is formed by growing a plurality of etchable, sacrificial structures, and depositing a discontinuous hydrophobic material onto the sacrificial structures. The discontinuity facilitates etching of the sacrificial structures to remove the grown structures while leaving the deposited material intact to result in surface features for achieving superior hydrophobic properties.
