    Abstract: An automatic document handling system particularly suitable for raster input scanners which is capable of operating in either a simplex or duplex document handling mode. The document handling system has document input and output trays (32, 56) in operative relation with a reversible document transport roll (50) which in turn cooperates with a pair of displaceable pinch bars (80, 81) to provide both a document feeding nip and means for selectively routing the document for either duplex and simplex processing. A document guide (55) having an integral control gate (74) effects inverting and recirculation of the document for duplex mode or in simplex mode return of the document to the document supply tray (32).

    Abstract: An image input terminal (IIT) with automatic document handler for feeding documents to be scanned into registered position on the IIT platen. The IIT includes a pair of multi-element scanning arrays with cooperating scan lamp and optics on a movable carriage disposed in scanning relationship with the platen. Analog image signals generated by the scanning arrays are initially processed in separate channels and then combined into a serial stream. The stream of analog image signals may optionally be thresholded or screened to provide binary level image signals or converted to multi-bit gray scale. A control system including microprocessor provides timing and control signals for synchronizing operation of the scanning carriage, document handler, and image signal reading and processing together with electronic crossover between arrays to avoid loss of data, automatic signal gain and deletion of bad image signals or pixels. On board array alignment apparatus permits adjustment of array focus, skew, height, position and overlap.

    Abstract: A raster input scanner and method of processing image bearing originals. A pair of multi-element scanning arrays (40, 41) with cooperating scan lamp (65) and optics (55) are on a movable carriage (32) disposed in scanning relationship with a platen. Selectors (504, 508) permit processing type and speed to be varied with image type. Where the image is composed primarily of lines, processing is done at a higher speed using line processing circuitry (505). Where predominantly continuous tone, at a lower speed using continuous tone circuitry (510). Where primarily halftone, at the lowers speed using halftone circuitry (506).

    Abstract: Array adjusting apparatus for a raster scanner with scanning arrays (40, 41) supported by displaceable blocks (106, 108). The blocks are supported against a spring bias 132 on members 116, 117, screws 120 permitting the members 116, 117 to be moved to raise and lower arrays 40, 41 and thereby adjust the height of the arrays within the optical system (55-59). A side member (140) permits, through screw 120 min , adjustment of the array position in the optical path along the horizontal. Screw members (152, 154) enable adjustment of the array focus, with pivot means (174) permitting pivoting of the array to bring the array into perpendicular relationship with the optical path.
