    Abstract: A credit card having a coating of a substance which when treated sufficiently permanently and irreversably changes from a first state having one characteristic of reflectivity for visible light components incident thereon to a second state having a second characteristic of reflectivity for the light components. Preferably, in the first state the substance is highly light reflective, and reflects light of different wavelengths unequally, and in the second state the substance is light transparent. Treating of the substance is accomplished by heating the substance, preferably with a high intensity light beam. Authenticity of the credit card is achieved by first measuring the amplitude of visible light components (colors) reflected by the substance when the substance is treated intitially, and by a later spectral reflectance test after additional treating which, by sensing the change in amplitude of a previously highly reflected visible light component, indicates that the substance has changed to the second state in response to the additional treating. The coating is deposited on a layer of a highly light absorptive material which enhances the reflectance contrast between the first and second states of the coating and promotes rapid treating of the coating.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating an R-R interval histogram by collecting and processing electrocardiograph signal data over a relatively long time period. The system includes a data collection section and a data readout section with the data collection section being portable permitting a patient to wear the device for long time periods without impairing freedom of motion. R-R intervals are continuously sensed and each interval is used to increment one of a plurality of R-R interval memory locations. The count in each memory location then depends upon the number of particular R-R intervals generated over the total time period that the patient is montiored. At the conclusion of the monitoring time, the data collection section is connected to the data readout section and the count in each memory location is sequentially readout and processed to form a bar graph indication of the logarithm of the total count in that location, the complete graph being a histogram of R-R intervals. An alternate data collection technique involves recording the time difference between each R-R interval which, when read out, produces a R-R distance histogram.

    Abstract: A system for processing a plurality of audio signals to generate binaural output signals. The signal processor has a manually operated spatial position control which provides a correspondence between movement of the control and the binaural perception of movement by a listener at a listening position within an audio signal space. The spatial position control is essentially an electric circuit analog of a particular audio signal space, with means for obtaining variable binaural output signals from the circuit to simulate movement of the listening position in the signal space. One embodiment of the position control includes a mechanical linkage to a plurality of series ring connected potentiometers. The variable outputs from the wiper arms of the potentiometers are combined to produce the desired binaural output signals. The perceived orientation of the listening position in the audio signal space may be changed by selective combinations of potentiometer outputs. Another embodiment utilizes an electrical resistance surface as the analog of the original audio signal space. A probe with spaced apart contacts picks up the binaural output signals from the desired position on the resistance surface, orientation changes being effected by rotating the probe.

    Abstract: A toothed rod (60) is positioned between the platen (11) and the symbol wheel (18) and prevents blurring of the symbol during the printing operation. The contours of the serrations (60a) on the rod match those on the symbol wheel arms and thereby prevent an arm from moving sideways when it is struck during the printing operations by the hammer (19). The toothed rod extends right along the track of the carriage and can be e.g. machined or moulded from metal or plastic. The rod can be designed with very fine and flat serrations to interact with a multi-serrated printing arm thereby permitting the use of this design with proportional spacing printing machines. At least some of the recess portions forming the serrations correspond to the printing positions of the printing machine.
