    Abstract: A raster scanner (10) with laser (22) for generating a scanning beam (32) and compact, folded optical system (24, 30, 33, 36, 47) for transmitting the beam to an object (12) to be scanned. The optical system includes a first mirror (24) for guiding the laser beam to a modulator (27), a second mirror (30) beyond the modulator for intercepting the beam from the modulator and guiding it to a mirror (33) which guides the beam to the mirrored facets of a rotary polygon (35), the polygon scanning the beam through a preset scan arc and returning the beam via a focusing lens (45) to the third mirror, the third mirror reflecting the beam onto a fourth mirror (47) guiding the beam to the object (12).

    Abstract: Data compression methods and the apparatus therefor are provided in accordance with the teachings of the present invention. According to one embodiment of this invention data signals are progressively combined to form successively decreasing numbers of groups of combined signals until a single group of signals is obtained. Those groups of combined signals containing non-redundant information are selectively transmitted. The selectively transmitted groups of combined signals are received and decoded whereby original data signals are regenerated. The data signals may comprise a multibit digital word or may represent video information. Encoding of the data signals removes redundant portions therefrom.

    Abstract: A multiple mode image processing apparatus and method. The apparatus, in a copy mode, processes copies xerographically. In a write mode, images derived from image signals are written on the apparatus photoreceptor by a raster scanner, and in a read mode, the raster scanner scans images developed on the photoreceptor to produce image signals representative thereof. A multiple speed drive is provided for the photoreceptor to move the photoreceptor at a high speed when processing copies xerographically and at a lower speed compatible with the data transmission rate for image signals when writing or reading images.
