    Abstract: An apparatus for developing a latent image recorded on a movable imaging surface, including: a reservoir for storing a supply of developer material including toner particles, said reservoir including a transport member; a donor member being arranged to receive toner particles from said transport member and to deliver toner particles to the image surface at locations spaced apart from each other in the direction of movement of the imaging surface thereby to develop the latent image thereon; a power supply, connected to said donor member, for biasing said donor member to deliver toner to the image surface during a printing mode of operation; a second power supply, connected to the transport member, for maintaining a predefined voltage difference between the transport member and the donor member such that toner particles are attracted to the donor member from the transport member during a printing mo de of operation; a controller for generating a donor member purge signal trigger based on sensed or calculated development conditions; and a power supply controller, responsive to said donor member purge signal, for changing the voltage between the dono r member and the transport member during a second mode of operation thereby causing toner to partially or completely transfer back to said transport member and optionall y transported to the imaging surface.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain print quality in a zerograph development system by employing a reverse bias doner roller cleaning cycle. SOLUTION: The developing device includes: a reservoir which contains a conveying member 170; donor members 176 and 178 which are spaced from each other in the direction of the movement of an image forming face 10 and supply toner particles to the image forming face, thereby developing latent images on the image forming face; a power source 515 which applies a bias to the donor members so that the toner is supplied to the image forming face for a period of a printing operation mode; a second power source 525 which maintains a predetermined voltage difference between the conveying member and the donor members so that the toner particles are attracted to the donor members from the conveying member during the period of the printing operation mode; a controller 520 which generates a trigger for a donor member purge signal based upon a detected or calculated developed state; and a power source controller 520 which varies a voltage between the donor members and the conveying member in response to the donor member purge signal, reversely transfers toner particles onto the conveying member partly or completely, and allows the image forming face to convey the toner particles when needed.     Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a developing device with improved edge enhancement of a developed image. SOLUTION: The hybrid jumping developing device 34 is equipped with a toner supply source 42, a donor roll 36 spaced from a charge retentive surface and feeding toner to an area near to the charge retentive surface from the supply source 42, a device 114 producing in the vicinity of the charge retentive surface a toner cloud for developing an electrostatic latent image on the charge retentive surface by applying an alternating current directly to the roll 36 and generating alternating electrostatic field, and an edge enhancement scavenging (sweeping) device 200 existing near the roll 36 and redistributing the toner on the developed electrostatic latent image. The device 200 generates electrostatic field between the developed latent image and the device 200 and scavenges the toner from the developed latent image so as to improve the edge enhancement of the image.
