Abstract: A raster output scanner (50) includes a collimator (14), a rotating polygon mirror (20), post-polygon optics (22) and a photoreceptor (24). The scanner utilizes a spot separation error correction system prior to its rotating polygon mirror. The spot separation error correction system of this invention is a zoom system which comprises two axially adjustable lenses (54,56). By moving the two lenses in a pre-determined relationship with each other, the magnification on the rotating polygon can be modified and as a result the spot separation (62) on the photoreceptor (24) can be substantially corrected.

Abstract: A raster scanning system utilising a focus error correction system (17) for correcting a focus error both in the fast-scan plane (Fig. 2) and in the cross-scan plane (Fig. 3) without affecting the scan characteristics of the post polygon optics (29). The focus error correction system comprises at least two axially adjustable lenses (40,42). One (40) of the lenses is spherical and the other (42) is cylindrical in the fast scan plane. The spherical lens (40) has to be adjusted first to correct the focus error (between focal point f and the plane of medium 32) in the cross-scan plane. Next, the cylindrical lens (42) should be adjusted to correct the focus error in the fast-scan plane. The lenses (40,42) may be diverging and converging (Fig. 2), or converging and diverging (Fig. 4), respectively.

Abstract: A wobble correction lens (10) for a raster output scanner combines a positive cross-scan piano-cylindrical lens (14), which provides most of the optical power for focusing the light beam to a scan line, with a diffractive surface (16), which corrects the cross-scan field curvature of the cross-scan piano-cylindrical lens. The diffractive surface (16) will have a multi-level structure (binary diffractive optical surface) which possesses a diffractive phase function that will flatten the cross-scan field curvature of the piano-cylindrical lens.
