Abstract: A method and apparatus for representing a group of graphic objects so as to maximize usage of a display area on a computer controlled graphics display system. The present invention provides a means for @ collapsing @ a group of graphic objects so that the group is represented by a container icon. The container icon occupies a smaller amount of display area than the group of objects. The group is recallable (i.e. expanded) by @ tapping @ on the container icon. Alternatively, the group may be located on a separate accessible area of the display space. The container icon is itself a graphical object and can be moved, copied or deleted. Any change of attributes, e.g. color, of the graphical object causes a corresponding change to the group of graphic objects.

Abstract: A computer-controlled graphics display system using object-based representations of the displayed objects (47,48,49), and cooperating with a user-operated motion-sensitive input device. A powerful user interface technique called "wiping" is described. This allows selection by the user of target objects to be acted on by accessing an applicator and sweeping the applicator over the display (11). Selected objects are determined by selection criteria including spatial intersection of the applicator sweep stroke (50) with the displayed object, and time of object creation. The effect on the selected objects is on the entire object and is determined by an operator associated by the user with the applicator, such as object grouping, deletion, coloring, uncoloring, thickening, or object size relocation.

Abstract: A computer controlled display system for defining flow regions. A flow region enables a user to view long lists of data items on the work surface of a graphical display system. In a flow region, a rectangular region typically the size of the viewable work surface area, is organized into columnar columns. The items in the long list are mapped to the columnar columns. As items are added to or deleted from the list, the items contained within the columnar columns may "flow" to other columns. In this organization the items in the top of the list are in the first column and the list is displayed in columnar fashion from left to right. Thus, all items in the list may be displayed in the viewable work surface area.

Abstract: A graphical editing system is provided which allows a user to draw number of commonly used gestures (70-80) called primitive command gestures (Figs.4,6) together in essentially one stroke. The primitive gestures (70-80) are chosen to represent gestural syntax, analogous to a textual command syntax. The primitive gestures (70-80) are concatenated. i.e., connected in a series of commands by a gestural operator called a break feature (76,A). Every input composite gesture (Fig.7) is scanned to detect the break features (76,A). When found, the composite gesture is broken up into primitive gestures (70-80) and each gesture is interpreted and executed in the order in which the individual gestures were drawn. The preferred break feature is sharp angle (A) drawn between consecutive primitive gestures(70,80). In a composite gesture consisting of two primitive gestures, one being the selection gesture (70), the break feature is recognized as any departure from the selection gesture.

Abstract: The Pendulum Whiteboard Printer is a fully-automatic robotic device for marking or otherwise effecting whiteboards, pinboards, or other vertical surfaces. The physical device consists of an effector platform suspended by two suspension wires whose lengths are adjusted by motorized spindles mounted above and on either side of the board surface. The position of the effector platform is adjusted by winding and unwinding the wires. Electrical power is supplied to the effector platform through the suspension wires or through an on-board battery. Control of a pen and/or other apparatus on the effector platform is achieved through modulation of the power voltage. A further component of this invention is electronic and computational apparatus for controlling the device, which may include automatic visual interpretation and feedback from a video camera viewing the board and printer.

Abstract: A method for providing a flexible method for applying computationally significant association information in graphical input systems to information data using unrecognized visual information is disclosed. A method is provided to mark and index user-produced information (82) with special information designators called key objects (84,88,92) which can later be used as access mechanisms into the user-produced notes, without recognition of the notes. Visually recognizable, but computationally unrecognized, image segments are designated key objects. A key object is assigned a unique identifier that is computationally distinguishable from other key object identifiers. Key objects are associated with other data objects by attaching the key object identifier to other data objects in a data structure. A key object is easily created and reused, and provides a flexible and powerful indexing tool into graphically significant information without requiring the use of expensive or sophisticated recognition algorithms.
