    Abstract: The problem of electric breakdown in air at the initial and final contact points of a roller electrode with a reproductive surface is solved by providing a graded potential to the roller electrode over the area of contact. By selecting appropriate low level potentials for the initial and final contact points, air breakdown is avoided. The graded potential can be provided to the roller by means of a plurality of sliding contacts and resistively interconnected electrodes arranged about the circumference of the roller extending sufficiently through the roller to provide the requisite field to the reproducing surface beneath.

    Abstract: A process for image reproduction comprises the steps of contacting a charge blocking surface on a photoreceptive body with a developer material containing charged toner particles, providing an electric field of predetermined polarity between the photoreceptor and a transfer medium for attracting the toner particles toward the photoreceptor surface, subjecting the photoreceptor to activating radiation in image configuration for inducing an electrostatic charge pattern in image configuration on the photoreceptor near an interface between the blocking layer and the developer material and providing an electric field of opposite polarity between the photoreceptor and the transfer medium for transferring the toner particles in image configuration to the transfer medium. Automated copying apparatus and photographic apparatus in accordance with features of the invention are provided.

    Abstract: An imaging system wherein a imaging member comprises a layer of a hemotropically aligned nematic liquid crystalline material which is optically uniaxial residing on a photoconductive insulating layer. When the liquid crystal layer is subjected to an electrostatic charge and the photoconductive insulating layer is exposed to an imagewise pattern of activating electromagnetic radiation, the liquid crystalline material is subjected in selective areas to an electrical field which has components both in the plane of the layer and normal to the plane of the layer thereby inducing optical biaxiality in those areas of the imaging material. In a preferred embodiment of the invention a layer of a suitable overcoating material is arranged over the liquid crystal layer.

    Abstract: Direct electrostatic printing (DEP) is optimized by presenting well charged toner (34) to a charged toner conveyor (18) which conveys the toner to an apertured printhead structure (14) for propulsion therethrough. The charged toner conveyor comprises a plurality of electrodes (24, 26, 28, 30) wherein the electrode density is relatively large for enabling a high toner delivery rate without risk of air breakdown. The printhead structure is constructed for minimization of aperture clogging. To this end the thickness of the printhead structure is about 0.025 mm and the aperture diameter (i.e. 0.15 mm) is large compared to the printhead thickness.
